Welcome also EJarrett, and Thanks to everyone else.

Denman55, I hope it dries out some for the irises. They are pretty forgiving though, but I know to much water causes issues also. I have the opposite issue right now as were in a bad drought. Sighing! but what can we do except roll with the punches as they say.

Lestv, I will see if I can find any other pictures of the iris and post them if I do.

Hi Richard, from the other end of the country! It has been dry here too this year, but Maine is usually perfect for iris. Smiling

Welcome, Richard. I heard from my L.A. son that you all had some rain this
past week! He's hoping for an El Nino winter (lots of moisture) and we do too.
At least irises are somewhat drought resistant, once established.

One of the things I've learned from this helpful forum is the importance of labeling
your irises - when you buy new ones, or get them in trade. We have a wonderful
iris database, but it helps to have a name to type in. There are so many different
purples and yellows - we love them all, but it helps if they have a name! My first year,
I was lax. Now , with recommendations from this forum, I even make maps of the beds!

I've been trying something new. Photographing each bed with the new irises and their tags, close-up so they can be read.
I have a record of what I've planted and where, it's on my computer, and won't get rained on!

Look at that beautiful black soil! I'm in the land of nasty clay, so even well amended soil has a brown clay look to it.

I have tags in the ground, hand written maps in a notebook to carry around the yard and maps on the computer.

You can never have too many maps, Rob! I have to remember to have their tags showing when I take a pic!!

We're doing a lot of amending. Trying rice hulls for fluffing up!

Rob - the south is the land of nasty clay. Hard red clay. The kind that stains your clothes permanently. Raised gardens are an easy bypass.... Whistling

I use my maps more than anything else to locate iris in a bed. It is easy to walk outside with a map to figure out what is where.

Hi Janwax,

What about doing something along the lines of a small engraved plaque of some kind for each if they are not to expensive.

I use the same type of Labels/Markers that janwax uses! I just bought a new box of them, and they came with a marker to use. It's really terrific. Plus I have a Map which I drew, showing which Iris are where, which really helps.
