Interesting. What is the white stuff in the 3rd photo? It looks like some horrible case of white mold. It's even growing on the ground....

A banana plant with snow on it, there's a joke in there somewhere!

Boy, I do not miss that cold, wet white stuff.

Nice Colocasia and Caladiums Allison. What cv. is the Caladium? really nice.

Does the Tropicanna on the lower right of the 1st pic look familiar Susan? Whistling

Broken leaf petioles and ragged holes in the leaves of a Colocasia are a sure sign of spider mites. I was told morning doves were pecking the leaves and sure enough, ...

Love the Mojito in ground. Looks great. I planted Midori Sour in Ground and it is not happy. It has shrunken. My Mojito is in a pot near by and doing well. It has to be the soil it's in.

Allison, what's the name of the EE with your hand on it? I think I have one like that but there's no tag. It's getting too big and crowding the bed. I bought a few roots at a local market and I think it is probably one of those.

Hope you don't mind Allison but I bookmarked your list. Nice choice's. Green Grin!
The Mojito and all the other Colocasia, are planted in a mix of equal parts soil, peat and composted cow manure in a depression ~2" deep and filled w/my mulch. Straw over that as I ran out of leaves. Last year I grew Mojito in ground and it got to ~4' with lots of pups. The parent corm rotted over winter but these are two of the pups. The parent corm was pretty big and I think would have survived fine like the species corms.

it's either esculenta or odora.. didn't mark those either.. sorry.. was rushing this year hosting my sister's baby shower at my house and didn't mark any of them... when I get a chance I will take a photo of the spot I planted the rest.. Bill's are always huge.. always worth it

don't mind at all Evan.. I take that as a compliment I tip my hat to you. I like that kind of list when planting out.. easy to see which are sun tolerant.. and which go in the back yard where it's dark

Allison is the EE 'mamouth' ? Mine are in the ground but falling over. Wonder if it is because I didn't plant them deep enough? Does anybody know? (We do have excessive heat and drought but I've been watering them.)

Evan are you kidding me? Most of mine did not come up and the two that did are one little stalk. Bummer, I should have planted them up in a nursery pot and wintered them over. Very glad yours look so good. I sent some to VA when I sent yours and hers never came up either. Mine should multiply again when I re-pot for overwintering. I'll never let them sit out on a rack again over winter. By the way my calla lilies are fabulous. I have some that don't do so well but the bulbs you sent love the spot they are in and are gorgeous. Always wanted the spotted foliage variety. Should I store them as a dry bulb over winter?

Allison, definitely not Alocasia odora. http://www.briansbotanicals.ne...
What do you mean by floppy? They look fine to me. Check out Elephant Ear (Colocasia esculenta)

One thing, C. esculenta can get huge if given tons of fertilizer and boggy soil. I don't know how the Caladium would react to that. Does anyone know?

Susan, maybe try just piling 2 or 3 inches of mulch around them to help keep the roots cool and moist? and high N fertilizer.

Susan was asking why hers were floppy.. I am no expert but I believe caladium don't mind heavy fert and I know they like it boggy .. I always put water gels & slow release fert in the plantings

Thanks for the water gels tip with caladium Allison. Too late for this year but I'll put a deep tray under them so I don't have to water as often.
