Yes it is lovely... it looks like soft velvet... but in reality it has a hard slick leaf

And now it's in my want list!
How long is its dormant period?

i think it goes on and on...but then again this is my first summer for it...it says it is a good house plant.. this one came from Logees... but they don't list it now... maybe due to unavailability ...these folks seem to have it listed and at a better price than I paid

I did not find Florida Hill in the Green pages. Their prices seem very reasonable. Anyone have experience purchasing from them?

Yes, I've bought from them before. They have excellent plants and you'll get a much better value for less money than from Logee's (who I think sell very tiny plants for a very large price).

I'll go ahead and put them on my recommended list.

I only order plants online in the spring and fall, so I forget to enter the places that send me such great plants. It's too hot in summer and can be too cold in winter too, to take the chance on shipping.

I tip my hat to you. You are pretty much spot on with Logees. I have though had very good luck with things I bought from them. And they sometimes have hard to find things.

Florida Hill seems to be at the other extreme. A cursory view showed very reasonable pricing.

Thanks

The do have some wonderful varieties of Cannas that I haven't seen elsewhere.

You're right about Logee's having the unusual stuff. I love looking at their catalog but won't ever buy anything from them after my kids sent me expensive gift plants from them that were supposed to be blooming size Phaius (which are over 2ft tall). What I got were two plants that were in 3in. pots and no more than 8in. tall. Neither of them have bloomed yet, and it's 3 years ago. They might bloom next spring . . . Rolling my eyes.

yes Logees does ship small plants... usually things that are difficult or impossible to find else where... and their prices are a bit high... but they are paying CT wages and run a top notch operation... for longer than a handfull of others collectively have been in business... they are actually the plant they are supposed to be also...sometimes the reason others are not selling them is they are difficult to reproduce..
I trip up to visit them often... whenever I need a 3 hour drive there.....my favorite time is mid February... with ice on the parking area...and their greenhouses awash with blooms of their big mother plants.. lemon wafting through the air... and you have your choice of larger plants... that might not ship quite as easily.. it's like a trip to the tropics... and you don't have to clear customs with plants.. or wait in line.. to get on a plane.. and breathe the expelled breaths of 275 other tropic travelers.. excuse me I digress.....they do serve a niche market of folks that want it.. and have the patience to grow it out a year or two...to get that special flower that their local botanical garden might not have..we all know that the growing out of a small plant is where the difficulties arise.. so that is avoided for them .. and even with their new growing greenhouse .. and the one they propagate in... they don't have the room to keep them for a year..and present you with a lovely in bloom.. also sometimes a difficult task...with a short time frame for prime show

I'm sure you're right, Gordon, and I would surely love to visit Logee's greenhouse if I ever get up that way.

I just do not think anyone should sell a plant at premium price as "blooming size" when it clearly was not even close. I bought blooming size Phaius that same year for half the price that did, indeed, bloom!

Checking in from South Central New Jersey. The heat of the sun has made me crazy this summer. I had my greenhouse full of starter plants to sell online this Fall, when I pulled several muscles and ligaments in my right side on July 1st and from that day on, it was difficult to keep them all at the proper temp and humidity. I did have some help but even then, I had everything open and made sure the watering was done but it was almost impossible to keep them happy. After a few months I was able to go out for the first time and they looked great considering, but they were full of scale. I immediately called a friend who is in the tropical growing business and ask him to help me check my plants and see what we could save. We found 2 plants, both star jasmine that were free of scale but we had to destroy them also just to be on the safe side. I never gave insects a thought during that hot sun period. I was too concerned about the daily 105 deg. GH heat and lack of humidity and being unable to get to the greenhouse myself, the people caring for the plants were not really thinking of checking for insects.
Fortunately many of my big tropical plants were outside on my decks and some of my Christmas Cactus and Easter Cactus were in the house and outside of the greenhouse on their summer racks, so I at least have some left to play with this Winter but this has been a real rough summer. The greenhouse has now been completely emptied, washed down and sprayed. Every wrack and shelf was also washed and sprayed and the exterminator sprayed the bottom for ants and any scale that may have been hiding on the pebbles.
I had to close my online business and until I have completely recovered from my injury I will not be propagating any tropicals. I have to trim back the bougainvillea and mandevilla and jasmine when they finish blooming, but until then I have them in the greenhouse. It is still a challenge to keep them happy. The daytime temps if the sun is out still goes up to the 90s and 100s (with shade cloth on winter and summer now) and everything is still open, but at night it goes down to the 50s and over the weekend I decided not to take a chance and had them brought in to the GH.
I wanted to check in and see if anyone else is having a problem with the extreme change in temps. and how you are handling it to keep your tropicals alive and well. Here is a picture of my almost empty greenhouse just now. Have a great Fall and enjoy your plants.

Oh JB, What a rough time you have had. I have been having a running battle with mealy bugs myself. Just can't seem to get rid of them. I sure hope you have no recurrence of the Scale issue. Hope you are feeling better also.

I purchased 3 plants from Florida this summer and I was surprised because of the price the large size of the plants. Shipping was cheap. I was very happy and will order from them again this summer. I have wanted some Gingers and they have them for a good price.

Pretty much agree with everything Gordon said. I have purchased several items from them - usually small and expensive. And not available anywhere else.

Personally visited them 25 years ago Smiling It was quite amazing. My wife and I celebrated our 5th anniversary with a huge horticultural trip - Logees, Whiteflower farm, Caprilands. We dropped a lot of money.

I am sorry David I cut their name short. I was talking about Florida Hill the link above. The shipping was cheap. I do not thing the order was over 25 including shipping. My local nursery was selling the Siam Ruby the same size for 50.00

I got................................
Canna lily "Intrigue"

Thumb of 2015-09-29/Cinta/0feab8

Cryptanthus "Black Mystic"
The pot had 6 plants. They grew fast I had to separate the plants.

@Cinta. Those are both some nice looking plants. Hurray! I take it you will store the cannas in the basement and bring the banana indoors? Those Coleus ? look nice. How big will that banana get?
