Thread OP

These were growing in a cluster behind a building. They all had individual roots and there were many of them. They look a lot like arugula. They also smell very pungent and sweet maybe slightly spicy. They are pinnate lobed and elliptic I think. I have searched through all my plant books and the internet for hours and have found nothing but arugula. I think they are very young and might eventually develop hairs. Maybe they will look very different someday.

Help! It's driving me crazy! Can I eat them?

I think it is Western Ragweed, http://www.wildflower.org/gall...
Even though it is called ambrosia I don't think it is edible. Smiling

I agree, it looks like ragweed. Most likely Ambrosia psilostachya as Josephine suggested.

Any chance this might be eupatorium greggii (conoclinium dissectum)?

It's similar, but I don't think that is it.
