Well, asking nicely isn't always enough. Sometimes you gotta put on the crazy cape and run a few circles around 'em.
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

Its looking like this should be a great year for Lilies. Some of those sprouts are huge! The OTs from Ramona look like they're going to be trees Smiling

Isn't that just wrong that they market those as "Lily Trees". Looks like some are going to have more of a trunk than a stem though!

Diann, do you have lots of promising sprouts now?

I had quite a few up in the past couple weeks. But we got down to 29 last night and so, I haven't looked to see if they are mush yet. Smiling I'm taking the afternoon off to go play in the dirt and I'll report back later. Smiling

My lilies are all sprouting now and i've noticed that I've acquired a whole mess of babies..
I've never had them multiply like this from one year to the next....
It's like a lily explosion...Is anyone else having this happen to them...??
We had a weird growing season last year..cold and wet...
Must be they liked it...

What kind of lilies, Phyllis? I usually have a ton of increases on the asiatics and LAs, not so much on the others.

But my granddaughter Jenna and I dug up a hyacinth out of her cutting garden the other day, and it had tons of little babies all around it. I know I've never seen that before.

From what i'm seeing i'm thinking all kinds.. one stargazer put out 7 babies..which it never does..
all the baby bulbs were sitting almost on top of the ground...I buried them...various sizes...
I even saw a baby on the Deep Impact I have..on top of the ground too...
Then alot of them have split (offset) There's 2 sprouts coming up where only one bulb was planted last year...
some have 4...

Here's a pic of one of the spots..might be an LA or Asiatic...not sure
This bed was redone fall of 2008...added the La's last fall...

Wow, that's great, then.

It was a really mild winter here. Maybe that makes the difference.

Yeah I think so too..Every time I go out something new pops up...
looks like my Invasions came back..was worried cause last spring I planted them they sprouted and we got a very hard frost
Mush....So I haven't seen them bloom yet...
Funny how there's a difference between the established ones and the newly planted ones....
The established ones can take a whole lot more weather wise...

Phyllis, you're going to love Invasion, its a stunner! I've been seeing a lot of baby bulbs right on top of the soil too. Some have even pulled right up while pulling out last years stems. I know its late to be just now pulling out those dead stems, but I leave them till I see sprouts in spring to keep me from digging into the bulbs- I tend to get trowel happy in spring, LOL.

I have some Lilies I need to relocate, and they're really special ones to me that I only have 1 bulb of each, so I'm paranoid about breaking off that growth tip! I had installed a bed around a flowering quince that was already here, and now realize that it suckers so heavily I'm going to need to be able to mow around it. It also has poison ivy that creeps out of the middle of the bush and tries to take over the bed. So I've got 'Ariadne', 'Karen North', 'Silver Chimes, and 'Doeskin' growing among quince suckers and poison ivy- uugggg. And in fall of '08 we had septic work done, and the backhoe invaded that bed. I thought 'Ariadne' and 'Karen North' had been destroyed because they didn't show up last year, but low and behold they're both back this year! So this makes me extra concerned about breaking off the growth tips- I doubt they could take another year of no growth.

I have wild kitties who dig up my tags...so alot of them are missing....

Bears, wild kitties, and in Alaska there are moose trampling the lily beds. Oh my.

I would be concerned about that too Neal. Mine have done fine missing one year of growing above ground, but I'd be concerned about two years.

Watch that poison ivy!

I leave my old stems on until the spring, too.

I leave a small stump remaining for the old stem, but trim and burn the rest after the first hard freeze. I always think it helps with disease control.
