I don't know the difference between a Lily and a Daylily. Can someone please tell me if there is an easy way to tell? Is it in the flower shape, plant structure....??
Can you tell if this is a lily or a daylily or something else? I bought bulbs at Walmart last spring, they didn't bloom till this year. The package got thrown away but I think it was called President or Inauguration; something along those lines.
planted with Gopher Plant (euphorbia)

Lily (Lilium) leaves grow out of the stem. Daylily (Hemerocallis) leaves grow from the ground around the stem. Hence, a daylily stem is generally bare of leaves. Occasionally a daylily may grow a "proliferation" (small plantlet) on the stem. When you grow both you will soon know the difference at a glance.

Your photo is an Asiatic lily (Lilium).

Thank you.. I really like red flowers. I'm pretty sure the package said it was named President but I'm not finding a Lily called that... common for bulbs purchased at Wal-mart maybe?

There is a red canna lily (not true lily) named President. My guess is that name was applied to your lily. This is a common practice with imported Dutch bulbs. These bulbs are inexpensive compared to bulbs you can buy direct from American or Canadian growers/hybridizers who guarantee correct labeling and replace for free mislabeled bulbs.

I think you will find agreement across plant forums that inexpensive Dutch imports have a higher probability of being mislabeled. My worst experience was a couple of years ago I bought 6 bags of labeled gladiolas and NOT ONE turned out to be correct!

On the other hand, if you don't care about names then these inexpensive bulbs are a good way to fill out your gardens. I got some decent Oriental lilies in cheap bags a few years back. But for the most part, I like to be able to accurately identify my lilies.
