Lily (Lilium) leaves grow out of the stem. Daylily (Hemerocallis) leaves grow from the ground around the stem. Hence, a daylily stem is generally bare of leaves. Occasionally a daylily may grow a "proliferation" (small plantlet) on the stem. When you grow both you will soon know the difference at a glance.

Your photo is an Asiatic lily (Lilium).
