He has a Facebook account; his daughter does most of the posting on it. She has her own page, too. I know he monitors his Facebook page, as I have seen comments made by him identifying himself.

I have never purchased from him. His daylilies are too dormant for me.

This is very interesting! I have wondered about Mr. Benz and his address he lists many times over the past few years. Mr. Benz lists a 6th street address. I have always found this puzzling. This street is in the heart of downtown Cincinnati and there is no place to grow plants on this street. Where does he really grow his daylilies? For this reason alone I have never considered buying any of his intro's.

Wow! A scandal unearthed. Where does he grow his daylilies, and why doesn't he register them?I have seen seeds sold by him on the LA which always go for a ton of money listing the parents as what I thought were his registered plants. I never brought any from him. Thank goodness. Why would he behave in this manner? Either he doesn't care (??), or this is a gigantic scam.

OK. I just went to Benz's homepage for all his intros. I just looked at the top of the page back to 2011. At the top of the page for each year it reads the following:

"AHS Names Pending"

I just did the same thing plus I went to DG Watch Garden reviews. There are only 4 and 2 are negative for exactly this reason. One is from 2005 & one dating back to 2002!! So obvious this has been on going for a long time.

It does state on their page that their garden is located 20 miles north of Cincinnati. They may not live on that property of maintain 2 address. So that could explain the mailing address.

I know of a hybridizer here in Europe who does the same: has a mailing address and email address in 1 country, but lives and has his nursery in another country.
Perhaps for tax reasons? Hilarious!
Where he grows his plants it is defenitely warmer and better for growing DL's than where his mailing address is Thumbs up
Only 'problem' was that I thought I could go and visit his nursery.. Sad

This once, I am willing to overlook the fact that the AHS Email robin guidelines state:

Respect Individual Robin Member Copyrights: The copyright of each message sent to the Daylily robin belongs to the person who wrote the message. If a member posts a message including the words "Not for publication", or similar wording, that message may not be reproduced by anyone without permission. If such a phrase does not appear in the message, the message may be reproduced in the AHS Daylily Journal without prior permission. Any other individuals who wish to use such a message must first obtain written permission from the original author before this material may be used elsewhere for any other purposes other than 'personal archives.' This includes editors of newsletters of regional and local daylily clubs. Any individual violating the copyright of a robin member may be subject to discipline in accordance with provisions elsewhere in the guidelines.

No one asked for permission to copy my post sent to the email robin here , however, I am guessing that Fred was not aware that he should do this, and only wanted to share information with this group. I had agonized for days about whether to make an "official" post on this subject, and am thankful that a long time ago, a good friend and former AHS President had told me to never put anything in print without expecting that it might be quoted somewhere. That has come in handy more than once!

However, this posting has had a good and positive result. Word apparently got to the hybridizer that an official public comment had been made about his non compliance with AHS registration guidelines. Mr. Benz has been in touch with the AHS registrar and the registration of those past introductions is now in process. Please note that this information will not show on the AHS database until the next time that we upload new data, which may be in a few months.

Over my past four years as AHS President and the four years prior to that when I served as Awards and Honors chair, there have been hybridizers who have been in and out of compliance with registration. There have also been irate AHS members who have purchased cultivars they thought were registered and then found out they weren't. ( AHS cannot do anything about that! Check with the hybridizer.) The non compliance issue is one that we can only speculate about. Some cite financial issues, some claim to simply be forgetful, some get mad with AHS for whatever reason and just refuse to register their seedlings. It is important to realize that the majority of the registration guidelines are those that AHS must follow and they are rules set by ISHS.

Some may know that AHS will soon be hiring a new registrar, as our current registrar will be retiring. I can only hope that the new person will have the same excellent ability to deal with individuals in a positive manner and try to motivate them to register cultivars that are in commerce. IMHO, as stated earlier, it is fine to buy seedlings as long as both parties are aware that they are buying/ selling seedlings. But buyers who care about whether they are buying registered cultivars should ALWAYS CHECK the database before purchase, and if they can't find the name, ask the seller before purchase!

John Peat lives in Canada but his daylily operation is based in Florida here in the US. He travels down to Florida a few times a year.

Thank You! Thank-you, Julie, for informing us of this good news. Thank You! Now all the hard work Mr. Benz has done in the past will be validated through registration of his gorgeous creations. For whatever reasons, I am very happy that this matter is being cleared up. And John if you are reading this, 'dormancy' does not bother me one bit living here in New England.

Thank You! Julie ( @floota ) for you long explanation!

I don't even know what a 'Robin' is, but I'm sure Fred didn't break any rules on purpose... Thumbs up

The side effect, of mr,. Benz registrating his seedlings at last, is great! Hurray!
Hopefully the seedlings sold under a certain name wil gét that name, so that people who have bought those plants won't be disappointed Thumbs up

If I were a buyer I would be sure and wait before making any purchase from Mr. Benz. How far back is he going? Is it just the 2015 collection? So I think Buyer Beware still is good advice.

Thank you, Julie. I am glad this had a positive outcome.

I wish the new registrar good luck. It sounds as if the position requires a diplomatic and patient person.

The criticism in this thread has not been strong. Why, then, would this criticism cause a person change his business practices that date back to 2002? Mr. B. has been heavily criticized in the past and that didn't cause him to act. I'll believe it when I see it.

Well, actually I DID see a large number of registration verification sheets today. Mr. Benz was totally caught up with his past registrations in 2012 but then he fell behind again. I don't think what was said in this forum had anything to do with it.

Thank You! to @Claudia
Thank You for solving that mystery for me. I had never visited Mr. Benz's website. I have wondered for several years how or where he could grow anything on 6th street in Cincinnati. 20 miles North of Cincinnati would put him closer to my area and make much more sense.

As far as I am aware, John Benz has always listed his address as 6th Avenue, not 6th Street.

Also, (and this is more common than many would suspect) a person's postal delivery address is not necessarily indicative of the city or town or other geopolitical area within which they reside. The city designation of a postal delivery address is, in most cases, simply that of the post office which receives and delivers the mail to that address.
