The 1st looks like Tradescantia pallida (faded from low light.)
The 2nd pic shows 2 plants. The bigger leaves may be banana. The heart-shaped leaves are a bulb plant, like Colocasia or similar.

Thanks for the info. The one you say looks like a banana might be in the banana family but I would like to know what kind.A friend of mine has the same looking leaves on hers and hers has flowers coming out of it that are yellow and orange.

Happy to share. Your friend's plant sounds like a Canna.
Cannas (Canna)
Yours could be too, the leaves look a little long to me, but they are very similar plants. Someone more familiar with banana plants may be able to help you with a more specific ID.

The plant in the first photo does look like Tradescantia but I have no clue which one, there are quite a few listed in the database with photos for comparison: http://garden.org/plants/brows...

For the large plant in the second photo, can you gently separate those leaves to get a photo of the stem? The leaves don't look right for Canna to me but as Tiffany mentioned, it might be Musa (Banana): http://garden.org/plants/brows... although the growth habit looks a bit "off" to me for Banana.
My first thought was maybe Heliconia: http://garden.org/plants/searc...
or Bird of Paradise: http://garden.org/plants/searc... http://garden.org/plants/brows...

The plant beneath the larger one in the second photo might be Elephant Ears (Colocasia) or possibly a Philodendron
