Southern dialect ... "Shh-ga". I'm from Virginia and that's the way we'd say it but it might have a bit different sound if folks in N.C., S.C. and Georgia are saying it .... there's a hint of a difference in the southern dialects.

Gee, I must be a Southerner (well, Southern California, that is ) because I've been mentally pronouncing it like Lin.

So my question is .... what does it mean? Is it a slang word for sugar or something else?

Not slang at all but a dialect. It's the way I pronounce the word sugar. For @Suga it could mean something else.

Like "give me some sh-ga"

A southern form of endearment. Many southerners say "Hey Suga" when they are saying hello to a loved one, friend, neighbor, a clerk at a store, a stray dog or cat ...

My youngest sisters former mother in law called everyone Suga and my niece had a retriever named Sugar (Suga) when she was a youngster. She picked the name because here grandmommy called everyone Suga.

Many southerners also greet folks with saying "Hey" instead of "Hi" or "Hello" and we say Y'all instead of You all.

Congrats Natalie! Jay offered some really fabulous Hibiscus seeds for this raffle Those seeds were sooo tempting ... but we're moving in a few months and it will be a year or maybe longer before I'll get a chance to sow seeds. You are going to end up with some really beautiful plants!
