Where are we going, and why am I in this hand-basket?

Zone 9. It will be interesting to see if you have success with martagons. They are normally cold weather plants, and survive even Zone 1 (-50F). Of course, they are cozy under a heavy snow blanket.

There are people in Australia that grow martagons.
Anthony, what USDA zone are you?

my martagon seeds have always just germinated in the spring without any of that fuss, but I started them early before it got very warm and had to keep them shaded or they fried. Also lost nearly all the potted ones last year when it got below 10F, so hardiness doesn't mean they will survive that much cold naked.

That's a really vigorous martagon, Anthony. I'll bet it germinated immediate hypogeal, too. Sometimes it happens. Keep a close eye on it for propagation material. I hope it has an equally desirable flower. Thumbs up

You don't have the corner on embarrassment, Anthony. I thought this was an ugly chance hybrid of two species of veronica in my garden. I posted it on a forum I moderate.

http://nargs.org/smf/index.php...

It turned out to be a new weed I never knew existed.

It very well could be the same - Veronica serpyllifolia. The USDA lists it as growing in nearly every state in the union, including your county, Pard. That was the second "new" weed that seems to have "drifted" over from the neighbor's.

The presence of this noxious little weed is nobody's fault but my own. Years ago (probably 1980s) I brought a couple of specimens home from the woods. They appeared to be a terrific addition to my rock garden. Actually this stuff performed superbly by forming little mats along the edges of the elevated rocks, then growing over the edges a bit. The flower stems (up to about 2" high) emerged along the outer edge of the mats, presenting just the effect I dreamed of with their tiny blue flowers. The stems never emerge from the inner portions of the mat.

Then one day I decided I wanted a pond with fishies right where the rock garden was located (not far from an outlet). So of course that excess soil had to be moved to another location and the rest is history.

Thank you for the detailed instructions, Rick.
I have just sown martagon seeds following those instructions.

I still have some out in WS jugs, but I think that mice may have raided those.
There were nice green shoots last summer.

Maybe not as they require vernalization in order to flower.

I'd say you would win that bet.

Of all the lily species, Martagon lilies are best adapt to the coldest regions.

But then,---- you have some beautiful tropicals that we can not grow here.

Question for Rick or anyone???

Should those upside down ziploc bags be vented???
It bothers me that they are sealed???
