Do to the last couple weeks of hot dry weather my ferns have died back.
Can I assume they went dormant and will be back in the spring?

What inds of fern do you have Bluepoppy? I have Wood fern in the yard, Boston Fern and Fishtail Fern in hanging pots for the past 5-10 yrs, Ming fern, Holly fern and Asparagus Fern who all survived a recent heat spell in Texas. If the roots are kept most and alive, usually they can recover from various weather assaults.
