Scientific Evidence That Being Outdoors Makes You Happy

By Bubbles
August 2, 2011

Now there’s actual proof that the effects of being outdoors and exercising are good for your health. An article in Scientific American magazine cited a research study conducted by scientists at the University of Essex just outside London. It was published in the Environmental Health and Technology journal.

So...love the outdoors! But when it's too hot, love it from the window with the A/C running, and commune with nature in early morning and in the evening. And drink water....always, always! DH, with his medical problems, has spent way too much time in the ERs because of severe dehydration! Just remembered...I need to get the ladder out and replace the bulbs in the outer deck lights...maybe this evening. The other night, I opened the door and this really pungent odor told me that either a certain striped member of nature's kingdom was out there or had already left. Tried looking safely from the deck, but no lights! Hmm...we seldom get those, but with my deer feeding/watering area, you just never know what might drop by to visit! Wish I had one of those night cams...might be interesting! I'd like to get one of those Ring-tailed Cats on camera!

You guys crack me up!
I think I love being outside because I know how much work piles up out there if I don't get my butt out there!
I do enjoy looking for new butterflies and new buds, blooming flowers, baby Muscovy ducks, and new growth in general, except for the back-breaking weeds to be pulled!!

I just read this thread. Held my breath for a second during Sandi and Sharon's er...
conversation. Loved the oxymoron exchange!

Enjoyed the article, Sandi.

Ha! Sandi is way out of town and unless she has her smart phone with her, we could have an uninterrupted conversation about oxymorons, Larry. But, chances are she has her phone right there.

In which case...Hey Bubbles, I sure hope you are having a good time.

I do have phone...to protect myself! It rained all afternoon, but we still love nyc. Today we hit museums.
Thanks Larry, I do know now that oxymoron is Sharon's clever way of calling me an airhead.

LOL, you all are too funny! So here's how to get more 'outside' time... first, get 5 dogs (plus one more that you are fostering but might just keep). Then, let them remind you four times a day that it's time to go 'out'. They don't let you off the hook, btw! Then, build a bunch of gardens, waterfalls, flower beds, and grass, that all needs watering, pruning, cutting, maintaining. That'll keep you outside for quite a while, daily! Now you all know why I'm so dang happy! Hilarious!

My daughter's family has a dog, but other than letting it into the small back yard periodically to "do his business", that's it! None of them take it for walks. I felt sorry for the poor dog and took it for a walk once when I was visiting, but I live far away and seldom go out of my area. Hopefully they will hire a dog walker now that their financial situation is greatly improved! DD is a professional and seems to have no time for much of anything.

Brenda, I have everything you've suggested except for the 5 dogs. I'm not going to let my self get attached to another dog. I'm content with having a grand dog that visits. I do know what you mean about staying busy with gardening. I'm on my way outside again to re-pot some plants that have outgrown their present pots. Even with our oppressive heat, plants are still demanding more care.
