Hello. I am new to gardening and am not familiar with taking care of plants other than watering. I received an orchid for my mother's funeral about 2 months ago which was beautiful. It has started to shed its bloom, which I thought was normal, but now 3 of the bottom leaves have turned yellow. I must be honest and say that when my sister-in-law was here, she said someone told her to water the orchid with placing ice cubes (just a few) on top of the moss, so they will drop water down as to not over flood the plant (which is what I have done). The plant is indoors near a north window. I live in Miami, so the air conditioner is on all the time, but no direct air vent is near the plant. The rest of the leaves look perky and upright. Any advice would be appreciated. I would love to have this plant for a long time. Every time I see it, I am reminded of my mom who was great with plants. Thank you.

Ditch the ice cubes! Not a recommended way to water. I don't use anything colder than lukewarm water. Here is what is recommended by the American Orchid Society. http://www.aosforum.org/educat...

Also if all the flowers are gone, it may rebloom if the spike stays green. I leave 2 nodes on the spike and clip above that in case it will rebloom. As far as the yellow leaves, I would check the health of the roots, but if this is more than you can handle, I'd let them completely dry out and then remove them without tearing the plant (they should come off easily).

Looks like your phals just losing its old leaves, they do this. Also looks like its planted in moss. I'd repot it now the flowers have finished. Check out the roots. Are any rotted? trim any that are and you'll proberly be able to keep it in the same size pot or smaller if you cut any roots off. I use a bark/perlite mix. Moss stays wet longer and i find i rot my orchids in it.
Yeah you want to water it by running water through the pot then let it drain properly, then let it almost dry out before watering again.
