All my gardens are laid out in sections of 4 by x feet. The picture shows 2 areas that are 4 x 12 feet in the front of our house. I then divide those into 2 x 2 foot areas. I number and label the area with 1 x 12 inch paint stirring sticks. I use Quickbooks 2013 to keep track both inventory and sales. There are 5 "Custom Fields" you can set up for each inventory item. I set one of them as "Location". The picture shows 2 4 x 12 foot areas, they would be labeled FR - 01 thru FR - 24. Our back yard has most of our inventory and is laid out in a similar fashion. I can then use Quickbooks to print inventory lists sorted by name or location or any other field i want.

We really don't sell that much, just enough for the gardens to pay for themselves. It is a lot of initial setup work but it really pays off when finding specific iris to dig and ship.

Hope this helps.

John, I have an older version of quick books pro (2004). I will check to see if I could set It up in there.

Richard, I was using 2007 but upgraded to 2013. The reason being is the 2013 version supports item attachments. So when you are on the inventory page, there is an "attachment" column where you can attach a photo to the item. I managed to get the 2013 version for $115 on eBay. It was brand new. You just have to make sure you get a "New" copy as Intuit will not let you register a previously owned copy, even if the previous owner uninstalled it.

I would gladly send you my 2007 version but Intuit would not let you register it.

That sort of thing is beyond me. Just use legal pad for lists. Rolling my eyes.

I'm with you Lucy... I had this dazed look on my face trying to make sense of Quickbooks. I'm visual.. so Debra's method is easy for me to understand.

I use a Mac, and use Pages to keep an alphabetized list (with photos) of what I have and what I want. I use a program called Icon Logo and Avatar Designer to map out what is where, since I have iris mixed in some beds with lots of bulbs and some with perennials and then some beds with just iris. The program makes it easy to swap out names when I replace something, and delete things when they go belly-up. Or in the belly of a squirrel.
