I am just getting into iris and want to know what later blooming plants can be paired with them?

My plants are scattered or in small bunches compared to some of the "beds " I have seen here.
Mine are planted to bloom with nepeta and salvias in spring.
I have some spots for an Iris -Phlox combination but wonder if the phlox are too shading for iris and I will end up with rotted rizomes.

I always plant things to close. Its OK the first year but then things quickly become to crowded. I need to show some restraint that I haven;t found yet. I like a few phlox, rudbeckia, and echinaces for summer color. The second two naturalize in my garden.

I tried day lilies with my iris, it was a great idea, but in reality the differing water needs caused problems. I just finished transplanting my iris all into one bed along the west side of the house, where they can bloom and multiply to their hearts content all by themselves.

Do others have problems with the differing water needs when coplanting with iris?

I am new too. I did realize iris dont need much watering but DL's also are hardy souls and can survive anywhere.
I have them planted together .It will be a first year for newly planted iris purchases. I'll let uou know when a couple of seasons pass.

I keep my TB iris seperate from my daylilies also. I actually have a nice TB iris bed with daylilies around it but the iris bed is seperate, only iris. I have those edger pavers you can buy at home depot laid out to define the iris bed and that really works best for me.
