Hi All,
I'm in charge of programs for my DL club next year. Please tell me what your favorite programs have been or what you'd like to see.

I'm also doing "Back to Basics" spots at each meeting. What would you like if you were to attend these?

Thanks!
Leslie

Hi Leslie - according to the news you guys might need a program on good soil drainage!

I haven't seen any programs in person but I will say from the ones I've seen on Facebook, one thing that I find really interesting is seeing photos of the parents along with the various offspring. Karol Emmerich is very good in this regard.

In terms of a 'back to basics' I think it would be good to tackle some of the more frequent questions. That is to say, what to plants look like in the spring vs the fall. Rust...how to deal with it once it inevitably arrives. Proper feeding for plants in the ground vs in pots ( including soil, soil amending, and soil-less mixes). Perhaps the basics of dividing a clump.

I would attend if that was the program! Hurray!

To be honest, I would attend ány DL club no matter what the program is, because we don't have a DL club here.. Blinking
but yes, these are subjects I would like to learn more about Thumbs up

I agree, I always love seeing how the genetic throw of the dice turned out for various crosses. It would be especially neat if everyone would take pictures of ALL of the seedlings of a cross just to see the variation. I went to a DL garden this summer where she had a little spot in her garden to show off all of the seedlings from one particular cross in order to see how different (or similar) they all look. I'd love to see more of that. It's easy (and interesting) to look at one bloom and just its parents and go 'uh-huh, yeah, I see the resemblance'...but it's even more interesting to see ALL of the 'kids' of the cross. Big Grin

Mayo - I totally agree with you .... no daylily clubs here either. Sad

Libby - I would love to see a bunch of seedlings of a particular cross from 2 distinct parents. I find it most fascinating and informative as well. I know pro hybridizers know their parent plants so well that they can figure out how to create something specific using certain parent plants. I want to be able to do that some day. Thumbs up

James, we are fine but about 15 miles from us the flooding is so bad they've had to evacuate people. 9 people have died from the floods in SC. Good drainage would be a good one!

Mayo, maybe you can start a club!

What y'all have said is right in line with what I've been thinking. This month I'm doing hands on lessons in how to divide, how to plant and methods of labeling.

I totally agree on the idea of showing parents and their offspring. I know Jamie Gossard is good about telling the lineage of his stuff. I'm thinking it would be good to have David Kirchhoff, Mort Morss or John Rice come to do a talk since they're going to be tour gardens for the national next year.

Is the water going down by now, or is it still rising? I saw on CNN that several dams have broken.. Crying

Lalambchop1 said:Mayo, maybe you can start a club!

Haha, I would LOVE to start a DL club! But then I would have to know people who like/love DL's, right?
The only 2 people I know in The Netherlands are about 200 km away and they are (amateur) nurseries.

@Beckygardener: perhaps we can start an online club? I'm sure there are a lot of people out there that don't have or can't go to DL clubs Thumbs up
We could go to nurseries or gardens by ourselves and make a movie of our visit, we could ask if speakers at other clubs would mind to be filmed and shared with us? Hey, we can Skype and 'visit' each other! Hurray!

Sandy Holmes does a very nice program as well. The programs I've seen her do have all included parentage with images.
Although some of the top circuit speakers will already have a planned and prepared program, if parentage is something you are interested in having your speaker talk about you could ask them when inviting them to speak if they do or could include it.

Several clubs in my area plan one meeting for all club member hybridizers to do short programs of their sdgs and/or intros. We typically have a limit of 10 - 15 sdlgs/intro's and a time of 10 mins. for each members segment, (time can be adjusted to number participating and meeting time). Some folks will prepare their own mini program to be shown. For those who do not use Powerpoint the images are sent to a volunteer who will put together one Powerpoint containing a different program segment for each person. As each members program comes up they have the opportunity to speak to the group about their program, sdlgs and intro's if they have any. Everyone enjoys showing and talking about their sdlgs and we get to see what others are working on in our area. This is a popular program and doesn't include the cost of bringing in a speaker.

The water is up and down, Mayo. When the dams were breached it went up but subsided after. From what I saw on the local news last night several places are still flooded. There are more dams they're watching that may be breached.

You have wonderful ideas! I'd be interested in an online club.

Do you know about Monday Night Lights? Once a month a couple of hybridizers present a program of their work. It's on facebook. Michael Miller is the coordinator.

Char, sounds like you have a great club! I was spoiled when I first started in daylilies to be in the Sunbelt Club in central Florida. I was such a newbie that I didn't realize at first that the member programs from David Kirchhoff, Mort Morss, Frank Smith, the Salters, the Stamiles, Phil Reilly, Luddy Lambertson, the Trimmers, Dan Hansen and the Kinnebrews were unusual. Good to hear the water seems (at least) to be receding! I have a long time friend who moved to Charleston last year and she's getting a little nervous as the water creeps closer and closer.

Spoiled! The Indianapolis club has had some very good speakers the last couple of years but I have yet to make it to a meeting. With road construction the normally 3 hour drive was taking much longer but now that they are finished it should only be about 2 hours! Easy enough to go there and back in an evening!

I thought of one more thing - starting/growing from seed! Especially if members donate extra seeds to newer members this can really get people (and kids!) engaged. I have quite a few friends who like to come and gawk at my plants but they are turned off by the price of new introductions. I usually give them some seeds from parents they enjoy and that seems to grab attention. The prices can be intimidating but I usually tell people the hobby will cost only what you are willing to spend and growing plants from seeds is a great way to get unique plants provided they know how to start a seed.

James, we DO think alike!
I have growing from seeds down for Jan. because that's a good time to start them. Then on through the spring months I've planned info on hybridizing, how to choose a focus for hybridizing, seed collection, etc. In May we'll do a clinic on prepping plants for a show and then a show in June.

Thanks for your kind words.

Becky, I'll see if I can get you the link to Monday Night Lights. I couldn't find it on FB earlier.

I talked to David Kirchhoff today and he's coming down to do a program in April to get us excited about the National in Kentucky next year. Yippee!!!
