Hello I am fairly new to this site and also fairly new to Hoyas. My first hoya was a cutting given by a friend and at first I wasn't sure if I could succeed growing it. I'm not a newbie gardener but I have had killed a number of plants due to merely neglect and not knowing enough about the plant's care. When i googled Hoya, I was so surprised to find out that a lot of the Hoyas are easy to care for and have very minimal requirements for growing. The flower of Hoya is a good reason enough to get crazy about this lovely specie.
So one Hoya and a year ago, I have now accumulated 9 hoyas, 2 of which were from friend and the rest purchased made thru online seller, local Lowes, a nursery in Tallahassee Fl and even my local Commissary. Not the rare ones, but I am still learning the ropes of this exotic plant. Four of my hoyas are now showing peduncles, one in full bloom and the rest still growing. I am hoping, I can afford to purchase the much more rare variety, for now I'd like to make sure I can make this specific specie happy in my garden under my neglect... er care ;-)
So I am hoping there will be some Hoya "crazies" here like me to talk, exchange views, growing experience, swap plants etc.

btw: here are the Hoyas I have in my collection
Hoya carnosa Rubra
Hoya hindu rope
Hoya carnosa krinkle 8
Hoya heuschkeliana var heuschkeliana
Hoya mathilde
Hoya breviliata
Hoya pubicalyx pink silver
Hoya meliflua
Hoya kentiana
Waiting on Hoyas pubicalyx royal Hawaiian and cinnamomifolia from an online seller ;-)

Welcome! flagardener; you will definitely find other Hoya enthusiasts on this site. There is a Tropicals Forum, and the Florida forum also discusses Hoyas from time to time. You have a nice collection already! Here is a picture of one of mine (no-name)

Hi Eileen. I started with one hoya 4 years ago, after it bloomed I just had to collect more. So the past two years I collected over 20 and I had to stop myself because I have very limited window space and I thought about 20 small plants becoming large plants quickly. It was hard because there are so many I still wanted to collect but I didn't want to get overwhelmed. Hilarious! Your hoyas are beautiful btw Thumbs up

Hi flagardener! That is a very nice collection! I also grow just a couple of Hoyas, only one of which I've seen blooming...The Hoya carnosa 'Hindu rope'
Thumb of 2015-10-06/terrafirma/322d73

The other that I have is the H. kentiana. It had formed a peduncle a couple months ago, but sadly, it either blasted, and fell off, or was eaten by one of our ferocious anoles! Hilarious! Haven't determined which yet!

Hi flagardener,

I agree with everyone else, it looks like you've got a nice collection of Hoya plants. I too grow a couple of Hoyas and I like them a lot. The easiest for my conditions and care (or lack thereof *Blush* ) seem to be H. carnosa, H. pubicalyx and H. australis. My plants usually stay outside year round and I have lost a few in extremely cold winters but I just don't have space indoors for all of my plants so the ones outside get old blankets thrown over them if we have frosts or freezes. I currently have a real tiny H. nummularioides plant in one bathroom and another real tiny H. heuschkeliana plant in another bathroom; both are blooming their little heads off and the fragrance is quite nice in the evening and at night! There are large skylights in both of those bathrooms so they get plenty of natural light and seem to do very well.

There have been a few Hoya related discussion threads over on the Houseplants Forum that you may want to check out, or even start a new thread in that forum to chat and share photos: http://garden.org/forums/searc...

Here are the database links for those you've listed in your collection, you can read more about them, check out photos that other members have uploaded and add a few photos of your own!
Krimson Princess Hoya (Hoya carnosa 'Rubra')
Hindu Rope Hoya (Hoya carnosa 'Compacta')
Wax Plant (Hoya carnosa 'Krinkle Kurl')
Wax Plant (Hoya heuschkeliana)
Hoya 'Mathilde'
Wax Plant (Hoya brevialata)
Wax Plant (Hoya pubicalyx 'Pink Silver')
Wax Plant (Hoya meliflua)
Wax Plant (Hoya kentiana)
Wax Plant (Hoya pubicalyx 'Royal Hawaiian Purple')
Wax Plant (Hoya cinnamomifolia)

Tara I love the wooden container you have your Hoya in. I think I spotted something like that at a plant sale not long ago, now I wish I had bought one.

Thanks Hetty! Yeah, I love the hanger also. Actually, I got it from a member here at ATP. His wife makes them, and was selling them here... The thread "Handcrafted Hanging Planter Baskets" in Classifieds and Group Buys forum

Definitely quality material! I'm really pleased with it! Thumbs up

He is shown as an active member, and made a post two months ago about bottle planters his wife had made; she is surely one talented lady!

I think we're all listed as members unless removed by ourselves or admin. for whatever reason. Big Grin jeffgreene's last post on the thread about his wife's bottle planters was January 2014: The thread "wifes homemade wine bottle planters" in Cactus and Succulents forum The last post on the thread, August 3rd this year was another member asking about how much to spend on a tile saw.

That really is a lovely planter, Tara. We could call out @jeffgreen - in fact, I just did.

Back to Hoyas, I know someone else who has a collection @mjsponies how are your Hoyas?

I don't have any myself - yet! - but just because I'm afraid I'll start yet another collection! Love them but am going to just watch for pictures for a while, until I kill off some more of my orchids, begonias, gingers, bromeliads . . .

Why don't one of you enthusiasts start a thread on the Tropicals forum for Hoyas?
