Mayo, I agree totally about the size, especially in the main picture. It looks huge compared to the foliage. The database, and Oakes, both list the scape as 20" tall, and the scape doesn't look all that tall, so that kind of matches, but it looks to be well above the foliage. Maybe the foliage is super tiny? Something just doesn't feel right about the main picture. The photos below that one look like a much smaller bloom to me, and much closer to the foliage. And then there is the black eyezone that is missing. I wonder if they think they have the correct plant, but don't?

I noticed two reviews, and it is too bad that it doesn't have contact information for them! You could ask if the size was actually on the small side, and if the blooms matched the pictures.

I'm still really suspicious that this is the correct name to go with the pictures. Shrug!

Natalie said:haven't really been all that interested in spiders, so I'm not sure that they even come in that small of a size. Would you happen to know.

I had the same thought earlier today and checked the AHS database. There are eleven spiders with blooms of 4" or less. There are 904 registered spiders if I remove the size limitation. So there certainly aren't many.

There are ten Watchyls registered as spiders and the smallest flower of these is 10".

Thanks for checking on that Sue. It makes me very suspicious now! Something doesn't seen right, or is it just me?

Not just you. Unfortunately, Mary Kreger passed away in 2005 so unless they've had the plant for many years it presumably came from another source.

Sorry to hear that she has passed away. It is odd that Oakes seems to be the only place selling it. I sure hope that a picture from another source can be found. Hopefully from someone who knows for sure that they have the correct one, because they purchased it from the hybridizer.

Hopefully this won't remain a mystery forever.

LoL, you guys already figured it all out. I had done research on this and there was such limited information on my Google searches and tracking down the hybridizer...well...I'd say that was a dead end, but that would be in poor taste. Sad

so...yeah. Confused Glare

I like a good mystery, so I don't think this is the end of the search. I'll need something to do one of these days, so maybe I'll go on a hunt and see what I can find. I'm really curious now!

The next step would be hunting down Mary Kreger's family members to see if any of them have the plant or photos. If her hybridizing garden was sold, maybe the new owners have some?

Check this out:
http://www.ahsregion4.org/page...

If you scroll down to the bottom of this page, you will see Mary Kreger listed under Rhode Island. See the note Watch Hill moved to North Carolina.

Here you go.... check out Charles Kreger's address and email under image information:

I'd email him!

I'll be curious to see what you two figure out! I'm not as motivated at the moment because I'm not interested in small flowers, but I do think it's interesting to find out what the original actually looks like!

The "other" website had a clworley who posted 2 photos in the Plant database. I believe the C L Worley is Cynthia L. Worley Nicholasville, KY. I just did some googling of names and found that info. Wished I had an email address for her. According to the other website, the blooms are 3 to 4.5" in diameter and scape is 18-24" tall. It is an early to midseason bloomer and possible rebloomer. It is a semi-evergreen diploid. It was a 1992 intro/registered daylily by Kreger which I assume is Mary Kreger.

I saw those pics on the "other site" but again, it still doesn't have the black eyezone - unless those dark marks partway down the petals is what is meant by that. The specs may just have been taken from the AHS registration, which is what Oakes appear to have also done:
