The leaves of Prunus virginiana are alternate and simple with toothed margins and they are variable in shape and size.

No one has called me on this but while I was away I realized this may not be a tree but just a woody shrub. I think I'm going to start over and check woody shrubs. Let you know what I find. Here is a picture of the leaf scar. I think it is too weird for a tree.

The leaf scar shape is helpful and can help eliminate a few possibilities - maybe it's my fuzzy early morning vision but I can't quite count the bundle scars within the lesf scar but it looks like more than one?

Can you see if there is a leaf scar present at the terminal bud as well? It looks like there may be but it's angled away from the camera, and presence or absence of a leaf scar there can also narrow it down.

I was searching for shrubs as well, and did not find anything more than when I searched for trees. I used all these terms: woody plant, shrub, and tree. Maybe you will have better luck than I.

There's pics of young stems on this tree guide which show the small raised bumps.

Natural Lands Trust is the region’s largest land conservation organization, preserving and caring for thousands of acres of open space each year throughout eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.

https://natlands.org/who-we-ar...

Osage orange, Maclura pomifera, is not native to this region but to Oklahoma and Texas. But it was widely planted for pasture fencing before barbed wire became popular—the trees can be pruned to form a thicket. Later it was planted to be cut for fence posts; it’s a very rot resistant wood.

Like Jeanie, I'd been looking for shrubs too. One that I'd checked out was the osage orange that Janet mentioned but I'd rejected it because I couldn't see thorns on the twigs. According to my tree and shrub field guide Maclura pomifera has "strong unbranched thorns at each leaf scar......This species and the bumelias are the only thorny plants with milky sap." Edited to add that would be in North America of course. Since it came from an arboretum it's not necessarily going to be in a North American field guide because its origin could be another country.

I just noticed the arboretum has a Maclura pomifera cultivar 'Altamont' which appears from limited Google results to be thornless - no idea if it comes true from seed. The buds should be ball-shaped rather than pointy though.

There doesn't appear to be many strong spines, and this is a young plant so the spines might develop later as is often the case.

Good point (sorry about the pun Smiling ) although the bud shape doesn't seem right (my field guide said they are ball-shaped as I mentioned in an edit above), see also:

http://www.hort.uconn.edu/plan...

The inner bark should be orange (don't know how early in its life that would show up), and the milky sap should appear at the leaf scar when a leaf is broken off according to this page (which also mentions some that are thornless or nearly so:

http://www.hort.uconn.edu/plan...

I would imagine Treehugger would remember the fruit given its size.

I am growing Maclura pomifera from seed and it developed thorns right from the beginning.
