Hi JoAnn Welcome! to ATP What kind of light will you be providing for your plants and what kind do you have? Start off by filling the bottom of aquarium with rocks or sand and leave succulents in pots hidden in the deep gravel and decorate to enjoy is what I would do. Something kind of like this below perhaps? I got this off the web and this picture is not of my work but is an example of how it can be done with your tank.

What will the temp in your basement be? They will need good airflow if your basement is damp and could be provided with a fan. Post some pics of your plants and tank and I am sure we can all pitch in some good ideas. Looking forward to seeing your project!
