I believe all the photos of H. phoeniceus are incorrectly identified. If you compare them with those of Pavonia hastata in our database you will see they are the same flower. Doing a google image search for P. hastata find numerous images matching those in our database, but the only images matching our database for H. phoeniceus are the one from our database. The most important clue that the images are wrong is in the images of the calyx and bracteoles.
Look at the calyx and bracteoles in our images of H. phoeniceus.

with these images on other websites. You'll see that H. phoeniceus should have numerous long thin bracteoles, which those in our database do not.

I see what you mean, Jay. I could simply move all of the photos, but it would be best to summon all of the photo owners to see whether they have something to say in their defense.

Well, I don't have a defense, except to say that I received the plant labeled P. braziliensis which is a synonym for phoeniceus. I recall being a little uncertain at the time and I posted photos on Dave's to see if someone would affirm the identification and if I remember correctly a few people chimed in to agree. If it ain't, it ain't and I'm happy to have the correction. I tip my hat to you.

I trust Jay to know much better about these kinds of plants than me.

Have no defense; was given this plant and was told that it was a Brazil. rockrose. Thanks, Jay, for the correction.

I've moved all of the photos to Spear Leaf Swamp Mallow (Pavonia hastata)

Piksihk, you probably will want to correct your plant list, local report, and event reports. I couldn't move them by means of a "merge" because there are six other owners of H. phoeniceus, who may have the correct plant, and the "merge" tool doesn't allow me to pick and choose the information to be merged.

Thank you, Jay, for finding this error.
