All About Petunias

By LarryR

Petunias are one of the most popular bedding plants ever grown. Among the array of colors, shapes, sizes and habits available, there is bound to be something to please every gardener. It wasn't always like this though.

Thanks Larry for the petunia lesson! I love petunias but never knew any of it's history.

I purchased this beautiful mix of blue-purple and white ... and while smaller than a petunia, the nursery called it a petunia and I don't believe it's a Calibrachoa because it’s larger than the ones I normally grow.
What do you think?

Thanks in advance!

You're welcome, Becky. Judging from the photo, I'd say those are Wave Petunias. Their flowers are a bit smaller than what we've come to expect. Is the photo a recent one? If so, they should begin cascading way down over the basket soon.

Larry, that photo was from last year and they didn't cascade a lot but a little bit. They did really well for the season...the Phoenix heat eventually ate them!

Thank you for your help.

You're welcome. Petunias can stand a bit of drought, but they don't do too well in high heat/low humidity.

Spring is really our petunia time. I had a gorgeous hot pink wave two years ago that grew so fast and remained gorgeous until 105 degrees hit Phoenix and in two days the poor thing has crocked.

You know, Becky, it never occurred to me that petunias in Arizona would be seasonal! Thanks for the enlightenment. I tip my hat to you.

When I was in Canada for my brother's wedding ... way back in the late 70's, I was amazed at the huge baskets of petunias and other flowers growing so well! I try here to get them to last through the summer to no avail.

I must have missed this good history of the petunia when it first appeared. I dig around, and try to find some of the old cultivars. I don't know if I am getting the old ones or newer versions of them. Also do some of the newer cultivars , but the seeds are pricey.
