A while ago I mentioned I thought I had seen a yellow Ti but was wondering if it was really a dracena which it turned out to be. I saw the same plants in a local store. They were being sold as houseplants and because they were inside with little light their color was more green. The ones I see in a garden in full sun are a bright sunny yellow. These pics are of the plants I saw in the store. They stand a good 30" tall.

Thanks Scott for the clarification.

Alice, those look like my Dracaena 'Limelight'. I have a couple small ones I may still get into the ground this year, though it is getting a bit late in the season.

The ones I have seen in a garden were planted this year, I don't think they will be hardy here although they might be for you as Naples is a good zone plus some warmer in winter.

Yes, I have several growing in one of the wooded areas of the property, 12-15' tall. They bloom every winter, nicely fragrant at night.

Interestingly, apparently the purfume needs to oxidize in order to be fragrant. The first year it took a few days to figure out where the perfume was coming from, as within about 20-30 feet of the plants there was no noticeable fragrance.

Scott, this is one of my Waihee Rainbows, on your recommendation I cut the original stick in half and grew these two plants from it. I love them, whatever they are, but they don't look a lot like the picture on Vintage Green's site. What do you think? Obviously the growing conditions are very different here than in HI so maybe??? Leaves are a bit ragged but they went through two hurricanes this year and a good saltwater bath.

Alice, I can see a resemblance in the older leaves with the yellow coloring on them as my plants have lots of yellow. The dark purple coloring on the leaves and all the red on the top growth of your plant is different. I have seen good red coloring on mine before on older leaves only. I do not remember any dark purple colors in the past. Also the newer growth on my plants lack any bright coloring. My plants took a beating by the Hurricane and leaves are not in good shape this year.
As you know the growing environment plays a big role on coloration on these plants. IMO Yours looks G r e a t!! Thumbs up

I think so too, Scott. I sure can see a rainbow in those leaves, anyway. Beautiful plant, Alice.

@ardesia, Alice,
Your Waihee Rainbow is so beautiful! I love the myriad of contrasting colors.
It reminds me of a Cordyline cultivar called Pink Pepper that was growing in the conservatory of Longwood Gardens over the 2016-17 winter:
Cordyline (Cordyline fruticosa 'Pink Pepper')
I live in zone 6b, so I can't grow Cordylines outdoors through the cold months. So it is wonderful to see your beautiful Waihee Rainbow!

@ScotTi,
Your W. Rainbow is gorgeous!
I have been tempted to buy a Cordyline with those lovely contrasting colors for indoors. However, the plants seem to be very large; they come in 3 gallon pots and the foliage is about 1.5 - 2 feet high. I don't have that much room to spare, so I will just have to make do with lovely photos like yours!

Oh WOW Scott, yours is beautiful with those strong yellows in it. Maybe the salt water bath mine had changed the soil chemistry. We are due for some very cold weather mid week, I have two of these plants, both in pots, so i will leave one out in a protected spot and bring the other in just for insurance.

Carol, normally I just take cutting of my Ti's and root them indoors over the winter. I get the best of both worlds that way, I have the color indoors during the chilly months and if the winter is mild the number of plants increases for the following summer. If we have a harsh winter I still have the cuttings which are always well rooted by spring.

Alice,
How do you root them? In water? Or do they need rooting hormone and a solid medium?

I usually start them in water, they look pretty in a jar on the windowsill. They take a lot longer to root in the winter so they are good there for many weeks. Once spring comes they really start to put out the roots so I do pot them up then.

The cuttings I got from Vintage Green were quite long so I was able to cut them in half and get two plants out of them.

One of my top favorites is 'Princess Leisha' (from Hawaii) always looks good. It is a slower compact grower.

And (from California ) same looks as 'P. Leisha' but smaller leafed
