Mulch, Mulch, Mulch!

By goldfinch4
August 17, 2011

Mulch is a wonderful thing! It keeps plant roots cool, conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, keeps dirt from splashing on your plants when it rains and it looks nice. In areas that receive frost in winter it helps maintain soil temperature, thus preventing frost from heaving plants out of the soil.

I'm a transplanted yankee, so I get a kick out of it, too. Hilarious!

The Christmas snow was perfect for snow peoples. The January storm started and ended as freezing rain -- so there was ice under the snow and ice on top of the snow. That's part of why it looks so pretty in the pic - ice glazed snow shining in the streetlight at dusk.

Y'all up north will get a kick out of this... Christmas day it snowed for EIGHT HOURS --- total accumulation: three inches. Rolling on the floor laughing

(now, how to get this back on topic?)

Ummm... mulch protected my bulbs from the snow -- so glad I had mulch! Big Grin

I wish we could get more snow as mulch here. When winters are dry, I have to add even more bark mulch, and I have to get out and water every time it gets above freezing. Those lucky people up north who have snow cover all winter don't have to shovel loads of bark like we do. I'm in zone 7 and I know my soil temps are way lower than people in zone 4 or 5.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.

Whoops! Do-si-doed again. I was agreeing with Dahlia!

Mulch here though is the leaves you can't get cleaned up before the snow flies. Hilarious!

Y'all would have laughed at me last January, using my tiny narrow garden spade to clear the snow off the back ramp so the dogs could go outside. The big dogs weren't a problem, but Zoe the Italian Greyhound actually walked off the side of the ramp because she couldn't tell where the ramp began/ended. (and bad mama that i am, I stood there and laughed at her before helping her up and brushing the snow from her sweater)

When we had our dog Buddy, who was part Border Collie and German Shepard, there were times when we had so much snow my husband had to use the snow-blower to make a path around the back yard so the poor dog could get around to do his business. Blinking

I always snowblow paths for Inky (mine is mounted on the tractor after the leaves are mulched) but he will boycott food until he has paths up to the woods (because that is his 'bathroom'). We also make 'play' paths...I wish I had PIX in really deep snow but I'm usually too soaked and shivering to take the camera out. It gets much, much deeper at times but here's some pix from the milder 'play days':

Poor Inky doesn't have much of a winter coat. Our dog had an amazingly thick coat for the winter, come spring I sure did a lot of combing. Hilarious!

Oh boy! Inky DOES! If I let him grow...he'd look like a sheepdawg! I cut him closer though so he can get his weekly bath...otherwise (especially in winter) his coat is so thick that he'd go hypothermic before he dried. And, he's only out to run and play, inside I keep the temps at about 79° in the winter or my feet freeze so a shorter coat is better for him inside too!

What kind of dawg did you have Margaret? Tell...send PIX?
