I made the mistake of ordering an unspecified variety of leek seeds from the online giant beginning with A. I'm including a photo of this weed with a very long root and nodules attached to the root. I repent and promise to order seeds only from businesses on the Green Pages!!! Does anyone know what kind of weeds these are? Thanks so much!

Looks like some kind of grass.

Vetch is a member of the pea family which make nitrogen fixing nodules on the roots. Do you have vetch growing nearby which might have set itself?

Thank you very much Purpleinopp. I did an exhaustive search of images and forestry/garden PDFs, and from all that I seem to have Japanese Stiltgrass. So, it is a grass! I apologize for suggesting that it came in with the sad leek seeds. I'm sure that weed seeds can travel quite well without much help!!

Thank you very much JRsbugs. I've seen vetch on our property. Your linked article was very interesting and timely in our understanding of the "nitrogen fixing" process. Thank you ! No apology needed! Uncultivated plants confound and amaze everyone. :+) Happy to suggest something to investigate. About all I know about any grass is that until I can kill it, I can't garden in that spot and the only good grass is that which is dead, so can't have any further input input for ID, but good luck!
