It's December and we're holding a fun activity that will have you exploring the forums, finding photos that have been posted, and associating those photos with plants in the database. Open to find out more!

I posted a bunch of iris photos but purposefully left some not put in the data base because they were not as good as the ones posted or, mostly, because there were already too many of that iris posted. Now you are going to put them in anyway????
You can have too much information.

If you really don't like the photos, you can propose their deletion from the database.

And you can also disable the association feature altogether, guaranteeing that nobody can do this action on your behalf.

Carl, if it helps in some way... I agree with you. I think I'm going to disable the association on my profile.

So far, the "importers" have been quite discriminating. I haven't had to decline any photos because they were too small, too blurry, etc. I think everyone's avoiding the bad photos.

Even bad photos can be useful sometimes, however. I might post awful photos of the black spot on my roses or the aphids on a rose bud in the rose forum, and I would never think of adding those photos to the database, but maybe they should be added, with the appropriate caption explaining the reasons for the unsightly look of the photo.

It's not that I don't like the photos. I posted them because they were at the Iris Convention and I wanted people to see what was there. But I didn't think that they were as good as what was already in the data base.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. In some cases it can illustrate the differences in what happens when something is planted in less than ideal conditions or growing zones.

I agree It good to have good and not good examples to look at. Especially good to show disease symptoms in the database. The database as the name indicates, should include as much data about the plant as possible.

I agree. The database was never intended to be a limited collection of "glamour" shots.

I certainly agree with that... but when you go to upload a photo to the DB there is this statement: "Photos submitted here must be of a certain quality to be approved. Specifically: The main subject must be in focus, and the image must have the right exposure (not too dark or light.) Additionally, while not a disqualifying problem: please do try to limit photos that include hands, fingers, feet and other non-plant items. "

That's the kind of things I was thinking about when I made my comment.

Dave, you supposedly changed my settings a while back, making it so that my pictures couldn't be added to the database by anyone but me. Now I'm getting notices again that some of them are being added by others. Blinking I had no idea that this would have been re-set at some point.

Thanks for mentioning that we could change those setting ourselves, which I have done. I had no idea we could do that ourselves.

I'm not at all opposed to my photos being in the database, but I don't want my lousy photos added! Sometimes I just forget to add them myself, and when I come across a good one that I've taken, I check to make sure I've added it. I would never add a photo that is a bit blurry. It isn't that they all need to be perfect, but a blurry picture isn't good, either.

Natalie there was a bug in my manual system that I had which prevented your images from being associated like this in the past. There are 7 members who I manually disabled and two of them had this bug affecting them. I have fixed it.

Of course, setting it through your preferences (which you have done) is the sure fire way to guarantee that nobody but you can associate your images in this manner. Thumbs up

Thumbs up Thanks Dave. I had never noticed that it was even an option to change that ourselves, so I was glad you mentioned it in the post above.

Not bad, if only two of us were affected by the bug! You do amazing things!
