So as a potential new addition to my "After Dinner Garden" I noticed some plantain the other day in the market. So light bulbs popped on. Why not?

Yes I know I am truly nuts.

But has anyone ever tried them?

I have done some additional research and it looks like this may be a lost cause.
Plaintain comes from Musa balbisiana. The stuff we eat is farrrrrrrr removed and the seeds are most likely sterile. They are absolutely miniscule like a banana.

Now one can get the seeds of the species and I may do that.
But doing the after dinner thing looks like it is not possible.

I did a couple of days ago plant some star fruit seed.

Do you know the variety of star fruit, David? I have a tree growing in the back yard that is supposedly a Vietnam type. The fruit is more fibrous than our local variety, but they are quite large in comparison.

No. It was very tasty - relatively large and plump - from New Zealand.

Is yours tasty? Maybe some time you could send me some seeds.

Sure, I'll send you seeds. The local variety is tasty, I'll try and find some. I'll check my "Vietnamese" tree at daylight...it's growing in the corner of the property.

David, yes I'm going to pour a little more cold water on your Plantain idea by saying - it makes a really big, heavy, water hog of a plant and you won't like it anyway if it makes fruit.

On the star fruit, you do realize that it grows into a 20ft. tree, right? They're really nice, have shiny leaves, little pink flowers on the trunks twice a year and fruit easily and generously. Most people here who have one in their yard spend their time trying to give away buckets full of the fruit. I enjoy it once in a while, but wouldn't want to grow one.

But honestly, I do hope you're planning to move to Florida in the near future? You really do have the tropical plant bug, bad!

Most weird stuff I grow is for one of two reasons (some a combination of both): 1) As a challenge or to experiment or 2) for Bonsai.

I obviously know that in Zone 5 B I can't grow a 50 ft Zone 9 plant that must be brought in. But I can sure try to keep them at < 2 or 3 feet max. as a bonsai. E. G. a 30 inch Cassia bicapsularis just finishing blooming in my basement.

Things I am doing this (Bonsai) with - 6 types of Bauhinia, 3 types of Commiphora, Ylang Ylang vine, 2 types of Boswellia, 2 types of Bursera, lemon, clementine, fig, pomegranate, pineapple and ~ a dozen more.

Latest? Coconut - just started today

Naahhh, y'can't bonsai a coconut. It's a monocot so if you prune it's one growth point it will die.

Can't put the wool in my eyes, David.

But . . . the carambola might make a pretty bonsai for a while.
