Thanks! I take lots of photos of Peonies, and love to see what others post. I just finished going thru "Peonies 2015" and knew I had found a good place. Hurray!

Here's another one I really like. "Rare Flower of the Frosty Dew". From Cricket Hill- Fall 2014, bloomed 2015.

Looks like it could be fragrant, is it by chance?

Tracey, it is listed as fragrant, but I really don't remember noticing its fragrant as "wow". I will make a note when it blooms this year. It bloomed May 7 for me last year.
Cricket Hill has it listed for $45.00; that is what I paid in 2014.

LG, "RFofFD" is gorgeous!

I checked on the peonies that were covered with the styrofoam caps, and they're still alive, despite several nights of freezing temps.

Here's Kirinmaru today.

Douglas Brand planted 12/26, and Japanese Itoh planted 12/14, also have pips that are increasing in size, so confused by our crazy weather.

Gardenia also has pips that are increasing, I'll have to put more soil over this one, the heavy rains we've been having washed away the soil, and exposed the roots.

If you think of it, smell it for me this summer, LG. Thank you!
Honestly, I choose peonies more often by fragrance first and color and form come next... I bet 80% of what I have has some fragrance. Old school peony lover in a lot of ways.

Hi Tracey, fragrance is very important to me, too. Right now my 'Jelena' witch hazel is blooming. I planted it along the driveway so I would smell it whenever I go to get the mail. It is sweet/spicy.
Which of your peonies has the best fragrance?

Annette, I see you are like me and plant peonies late. It seems to prevent them from breaking ground.
They used to sell styrofoam rose cones years ago. You might want to look for them for your tree peonies. Here's what I found on the Internet.

I had Rare Flower of Frosty Dew for several years but it died in 2013 along with many other peonies, lilies, and perennials. Bit by bit I am replacing. Mine was never so beautiful as yours.

We still use rose cones up here!
The hardware stores sell them every fall!
I keep several in my garage.

Mary Stella, I can't imagine the challenges you face gardening up in Alaska. I think it is wonderful that they are commercially growing peonies up there now!

Caroline Scott, the big box stores have run the little nurseries out of business in my suburban town. When I moved here back in the eighties, there were three nurseries in business. Now there are none . So if the big stores like Lowe's don't have something like a rose cone, you have to order it on line. Sad

LG, thanks for the info about the Rose cones. I'll have to see if any of our nurseries carry them locally.

I do try to wait until the soil cools down before planting any new peony roots, unfortunately, we had unseasonably warm temps well into December.

Mary, I'm sorry to hear you lost so many plants in 2013. Was it due to the weather?

Do you have Angel Cheeks, Tracey? It's my daughter's favorite peony 100% because she loves the fragrance.

LG, I just ordered some of the rose cones, they'll come in handy here! I actually put up peony rings to add fleece covers to for crazy spring weather protection on several of my peonies, it'll be interesting to see which do a better job. These look like they'll be much easier to place and remove.

Annette, I'm so jealous of your emerging peonies! Looking forward to seeing bloom pics in a few months!

You do need to anchor the rose cones against wind and perhaps critters.
I place a small container of water on top to hold them down.
Or garden staples around edge.

Rocks or bricks work too.

I'll try garden staples, I already have a bunch on hand since that's what I use to place my drip system. I'll keep the container of water in mind though in case the ground is still too frozen to use staples, thanks for the tip, Caroline!
