I'm very glad to have found this forum! Our place in NM is teeming with insects that are unfamiliar to us.
Here is one that looked like a very fat, gross grasshopper on steroids.

Did Dave move this from another forum? I try to keep a watch for new posts in the ID forum.

It looks like Phrynotettix tshivavensis - Chihuahua Lubber

@JRsbugs. BTW, sorry for calling you a bug guy!
No, I posted it here. I do appreciate the ID and the links. I'd never seen this one before. looks like it might be 'taosanus'? Our place in NM has a lot of insects we've never noticed or seen in Arizona. Thank You!

It's OK, you didn't say anyone was bad. Smiling

Whichever subspecies it might be, and distribution maps are not a hundred % accurate, they are all the same species Phrynotettix tshivavensis. Bugs don't know that humans put boundaries on maps, depending on where it was sighted there must be some overlap.

Learning about the new kinds of flora and fauna must be daunting when you move to a different part of the country. I don't think I've seen that grasshopper here!
