Thread OP

I transplanted a fairly large jade plant a few months ago and now it has a fungus on top of the soil. I do have a lot of new growth though so I don't know if it is harmful or not.

Could you please advise.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely,
Joanna

Hi Joanna - what color is the fungus on the top? If it's green then it's probably algae which is a good indicator of too much moisture in the soil. Post us a picture if you can.

It is probably not harmful at all since it is outside. I say "outside" because you used the term "transplanted". Regardless, you can spray the soil with a fungicide (if it is a fungus) or a algaecide (if it is an algae) and that should get rid of it. You might have to do this twice, one week between applications. Alternatively, remove all that soil, rinsing off the roots with water so that there is absolutely no soil remaining, and use sterile potting/garden soil. If you previously used a packaged potting/garden soil, that soil was already contaminated.

Hello Joanna, if you can post a photo and advise us too where the plant is situated/location growing.

At times, fungal growth at the soil level indicates too much moisture retention in the soil, as suggested by Anne earlier. At any point, you can try to scrape off a bit of the top of the soil and mix in some pumice or perlite. If you are in a cold area/winter area right now, I do not recommend repotting at this time of the year. Wait till mid or late Spring.

If you are growing your plant indoors, try to position it as near to a south facing window possible, and keep dry for now.

@Joanna, please take a moment to update your profile. Just click on the little "guy" in the upper left-hand column, then, when it takes you to your profile, click on "Change your public profile". Add your location, and that can be your city/state and/or your USDA zone. Then scroll down to the bottom of that page and click on "Save Your Changes". Now, every time you post something, your location will show in the upper right hand corner. Location can be so important when asking/answering questions about plants.
