Well... Lots of brug blooms open every night now... it's heavenly up there... a few types of jasmine blooming.. some honeysuckle blooms.. and one tuberose well just about to be in full bloom.. some have passed..
Last evening I was up on the roof.. enjoying the garden.. and the heavenly fragrance.. and noticed a new and overpowering smell stronger than the others..
a new plant I got at the beginning of the summer had just bloomed.. [ @ about 1 1/2 ft tall...and a million open flowers ] although it says it usually ... in an established plant.. [ tree/ bush ] blooms from spring through the fall.. can't beat that.. considering the overpowering nature of the blooms...
I was wondering if anyone else was growing this ZONE 7 plant..

I have been looking and looking at that particular plant in the Logees catalog for about a year now. Is really a big fragrance boost? If so, I am sooooo ordering one asap.

Cherie, "Sweet Olive" is endemic to Texas and is probably one of my favorite small trees of all time. The scent is almost over-powering and lingers in the air the way the lilacs to up north.

I had a very young tree I got locally but it did not survive our drought.

i have a boat load of brugmansia I have to winter over indoors every winter so what is one more. I love the fragrant plants best. I will just have to get me one. In fact.......................

yes.. it truley is a heavy strong loud heavenly scent.. it projects in strength and volume.. one of the sweetest aromas much like citrus.. perhaps lemon but with almost a spice overtone..

IMHO the scent is Apricot! I love, love, love the Sweet Olive and have at least 5 shrubs on my property. For those looking for it, try Home Depot and Lowes for a great price. Remember that it blooms in every month with an "R" (SeptembeR, MaRch) in it, so only look for it in those stores then. In past years I have purchased it (blooming size, 1 gallon) in the $8-15 range. My last purchase was from Massee Lane Gardens (American Camellia Society headquarters, Ft. Valley, Georgia) for their own hybrid and was very pleased with the amount of blooms. This is one plant that I always keep in a 1-5 gal container so I can bring it inside for the scent for a few days. I have found this plant to be very drought & temp tolerate here in my zone, as long as it's kept in at least partial shade.

Are they fast growers or rather pokey things that only grow about an inch a year.

VI... so you leave yours out in the pot all year round.. except for when it's inside for the smell on the "R" months..I read they were good to zone 6 or 7 I think.. but in a pot I believe I loose at least a zone over having them in the ground..
Cherie.... mine went from a 2 1/2 inch pot to being a bush about 3' wide and 1 1/2 ft tall in a season from spring to fall.. that's pretty quick

Hey Gordon, yes, I do keep one out in a pot (well kinda double potted for looks) close to the house in a protected area (covered front porch). Thank goodness they do well in shade and with minimal water. Do you know that I have NEVER fertilized one and rarely water them? I have ones on my property that must be well over 12 ft and still thrive in our drought and still bloom in the coldest winters? I haven't lost one yet, knock wood, and it does go below 0 here at times.

I just wish someone would learn how to propogate them, we haven't had much luck and if I could, I'd surround my front yard with a hedge of them!
