Hello!

I have a spoonleaf sundew plant I just got in the mail, and the instructions, well they are VERY broad and don't give much info on care for the plant. All the instructions say is "prefers summer temps of 70-100F and winter temps of 38-45F" I came here to ask questions on care not mentioned in what was provided.

First, It says keep cold in winter, what should I do about that? Put it in a refrigerator? (Thats what I did with a dormant Venus fly trap by the way)

Second, should I keep the soil moist with distilled water?

Anything else I should know?

I see we don't have much information for this plant in our database, but here' a site that might provide some guidance till someone with more experience chimes in.

(Drosera spathulata is a synonym for Drosera aliciae)
And distilled water is definitely a good way to go, particularly if you have hard water in your area.

Subtropical plants don't go completely dormant so I don't think putting it in a dark refrigerator would be a good idea.

Most CP growers recommend using distilled water.

Catalogue of Life has it as the synonym. (December 2015)

You are correct woofie. When I did a google search, Google removed the h from the name and gave me D. spatulata instead of D. spathulata.

What company sold this plant?

I collect carnivorous plants, I currently have 2 Nepenthes, a Venus fly trap, The sundew I mentioned, plus another sundew and Purple pitcher plant on the way.

I'm also planning on growing others from seed.

By the way, Woofie mentioned a Database, what exactly is that? Im young and I dont really know.

If the plant just arrived in the mail you should have a receipt or box or something with the name of the seller. Was this a regular nursery type company or an eBay seller?

It wasnt Ebay, I just looked at the box and it was sold by Hirts Gardens through Amazon. Does that help?

Here on All Things Plants we accentuate the positive and give good reviews for sellers that have proved to be superior, reliable, trustworthy, etc.

Other sites allow positive, neutral and negative reviews. From reviews I have read Hirt's does not have a good reputation and has been known to mislabel plants. Almost 1/2 of the reviews are less than positive.

Keep in mind that you may have a different type of Sundew than what the label reads, especially considering they used an incorrect spelling. Check also for the care of Drosera intermedia or D. rotundifolia or similar.

I agree that putting the plant in a cold, dark refrigerator is not a good idea.

The entry for your plant is here. As you can see, not a great deal of information on this one. Alice Sundew (Drosera aliciae)

Drosera love sun and water. You should have your plant in a saucer of water that is at least half the height of the pot its planted in and as much sun as you can give it. As you are in Idaho, I would recommend distilled water.

According to Amazon, it should be D. Spatulata (its spelled wrong on the website). They are incredibly hardy and you will have them sprouting up in every wet pot in your growing area.

D. Spatulata is a tropical sundew, that means they don't need a dormancy period. Find it a sunny window sill, keep it in a saucer of water and it will be one happy plant.
