THE worst rust-bucket I have ever encountered. It left my garden over 10 years ago because of that reason. I also composted its progeny 'Admiral's Braid' and 'Tennis Bracelet'.

Purchased in 2009, Wedding Band has done just 'okay' in my garden. I like the creamy white petals, but wish the bud count was better. Usually blooms late June to early July for about 2 weeks.

The scapes hold up the blooms pretty well and the blooms are nice and tall above the foliage. Probably 2-3 way branching and around 8-10 buds. Not very good in today's books.

This picture from July 10, 2011, shows the foliage looking pretty healthy and I don't recall ever seeing rust on it. Guess living in a zone (6b) where the rust gets killed has its benefits. The bloom at the very far left is H. Jean Swann trying to double, and the coloring in this pic makes it look very similar to WB.

Here's a picture I really like from July 6, 2014. Showing off that yellow edge and a blush of pink.

I will not knowingly buy a cultivar with Wedding Band or Admiral's Braid in it's heritage. Both are well know for rust and plant weakness.

Wedding Band has done well in my garden. I have not experienced rust with it. It is not the quickest to increase. It is a Stout Medal recipient back when rust wasn't a consideration. With the crazy weather we have been experiencing will have to pay close attention this summer.
The soft color stands out among the Stout Medal during the 90's.

But it can be done.
There are plants with even more kids out there that I avoid (from experience)

(Something like 80,000 daylilies registered; plenty of choices still available).

I was so excited when I started out and 'Wedding Band' was one of the first plants I selected.

But 'Wedding Band' has been one of the worst performers in my zone 9a garden.

Don't know if it needs constant care or whatever, but it is moving out this year.

Liz, I am so glad that you mentioned that rust wasn't a problem back when Wedding Band was hybridized. I kept asking myself how a daylily would earn the Stout Medal if it was such a rust-bucket. I forget that it's been almost 30 years ago since it was hybridized!

Is rust even a consideration now for Stout Medal or other awards?

I don't think so, based on some cultivars that have been put forward for it in recent years. But if you look at a hardiness zone map and consider that for the most part anywhere colder than zone 7, and including some zone 7, and therefore the majority of North America (disregarding the population density of course) is unlikely to be having an ongoing rust problem it is hard for judges in those areas to assess for rust anyway.
