Does anyone know of a book that has a photo of all (I guess ALL would be impossible...how about a lot?) of iris? Is there a yearly (photo) record of iris that are registered that year? I have been scouring the AIS database and several others but I am actually more of a book-in-hand type of reader.

I think you'd have to buy a lot of books to compile just a fraction of what's out there. Kelly Norris' book is the latest I have, but he just scratches the surface. I've often thought it would be a good idea.. but so far, I haven't run across it. At least with the internet, we have access to much more than we used to.

I know it's not a book but we have over 43,000 images in the database here, you can go through the listings alphabetically, it can be quite enabling! nodding

While I always use the database to check what the non-vendor pictures look like of iris I want to buy, I would be afraid for my wallet if I went through the entire database.

My Virgo daughter came over to help me get organized, throwing out stuff. "What are all those iris catalogs doing by your bed?". she asked.
"Hands off" I said quickly. "Bedtime reading!"

I ran across a very big, and expensive, book about ten years ago that had a color photo of ALL the registered irises up to that point. The photos were an inch square and did not appeal to me.

I agree about looking at "real" pictures of the iris, for sure, but I also like like turning pages. My husband says I was born in the wrong era (he loooooves the internet / computer etc. _"why take up all that room with books when you can just look up what you want?" ) but I just enjoy the feel of holding a book. Plus I can make notes in it, stick stickies in it, won't lose it when a nasty virus sneaks in, blah blah blah.

I agree with you Darcy, love books for all the reasons you stated.

My collection of iris catalogs is a great comfort when sleep is elusive. I have quite a stack and love to look through them from time to time just for fun. ATP data base is awesome for quick reference but I love the pictures in the catalogs.

I also prefer turning a page too... preferably from back to front (I'm so weird). I remember seeing something about that book, Bonnie... but my memory being what it is...... I also like the internet though.. I just gave away a bunch of horticultural reference books that I haven't looked at in years.. I'm out of space on my bookshelves..

Jan, I'm the Virgo in the family.. It's my Taurus daughter that thinks I need to get rid of things... At least now that she's in the Netherlands I don't have to hear.. "Mom?!?! Why are you getting all these Iris?!?!?"

Sherry,

I also read newspapers and some other things back to front.

Darcy,

Daylilies had a yearly publication called Eureka with many pictures of currently sold varieties and their price through different sellers. For three years, 2002-2004, the publisher tried one for iris. It must not have sold well as he didn't continue. I was thinking of buying one when my financial situation was better. I think the original ones were in the $35 range but he sold old volumes considerably cheaper, about $18. At that time, three-four years ago, they were still available. Their site is www.GardenEureka.com.

Well, I just checked and the site is no longer active. Found some comments here on the Daylily forums and the publications apparently ended with 2012. Found a combination 2004 Hosta and Iris, so 2 volumes bound together, through Google, being sold for $20 plus $5 postage. Personally I would have snapped it up in a heartbeat if I could afford to, as also love hostas. But of course we are mostly interested in the more recent ones. You might set up a search on E-Bay, if it interests you, but since out of print, I doubt you could find it any cheaper.

Found one!!!! AIS actually puts a booklet out for every year, and then they have books for decades. Looks like the booklet comes out about a year or two late, but still!!!

Oh poop. I think I didn't make myself clear when I asked about it. Glad you told me - I would have been really disappointed to have bought them only to find no photos.

It's not a book but a site with many real nice photos. Just start on 'A1' and keep hitting next on the bottom of the page. It will automatically go thru all the Iris at this site.
