We had an exceptional November and December.I couldn't believe I was out looking at an old spot that needed a change due to tree cutting.
Temps in the 70's
The Chatham Hosta garden normally is part shade because of the fir trees.

Two trees were cut due to disease.
This garden has always been the stepchild and often had spotty care.
We were also having sidewalk work done to the front ,there were slate slabs left over so I used some to make a path in front of the two iron seats.

This was a grass and weed area.

New path and planting notes, mostly sedums for cracks and a few hostas for the path borders.

My SIL hauled the stone and placed them. This will be the first year I will contract for outside garden help. Just turned 80 in Jan. Gotta face it,it's just too hard to do everything especially cleaning spring and fall.

I don't have new ones---I just need to complete, or do,--- the ones I was planning to do last year. A brick planter needs repair.
Some other bricks are laid out where I intended them to be edges of a sweet pea bed.
My old "tent" greenhouse needs repairs.
I want to spread containers around the yard, but in nice groupings.
Need to mend the rain water gathering system.
That is what I remember needs doing, but if I walk around the yard----I'll find more.

The new front sidewalk area looks wonderful, Jo Ann! It does get harder to do those things the older we get. But we trudge one and get help to do the heavier things.

I have a new garden project this summer. We had to have a huge oak tree cut down last week and I am mulling over what I want to do with the area. I would like to move the bleeding hearts and tradescantia somewhere else, but am not exactly sure what sun loving plants will go in the area. There are already some irises and a couple of daylilies already there that will benefit from the extra sunlight.

This is the area I will be working on this summer:

It was heartbreaking, Kabby! We really hated to lose it, but it was hollow about 8 feet up and only a few inches from the edge all the way around.

Jo Ann, I certainly hope to make the edge different and also add more sun-loving plants! Looking forward to that.

@blue23rose - we had to have all but one 55 year old spruces taken down on Jan. 14th. It was agony watching it happen but they were not looking good anymore. One more in the front also had to go.

This is a photo of a photo from 1991, when we bought the house:

As of Jan. 9th:

And down they came!

Though he tried to make a bench for me, it ended up a huge slab atop a stump, but it's much too high to use as a bench. I may have the piece moved and placed on cinder blocks so I can use it elsewhere.

I did take a few pieces to protect clematis roots.

They did do a good job cleaning up but spring will mean lots more picking up sticks for me. They gave me many bags of chips so the asparagus garden now has the paths mulched and the berry row is done.

My plans are to finish the projects I didn't get done last year! It seems like I always have plants to move because they just don't fit where they are! I'd like to do a walkway through my arbor, but I think that's going to have to wait until next year.

Bluerose have fun filling that new sunny bed!

Well Arlene at least there was some good to come of it, free mulch. And you will have that heavenly spruce scent up close and personal when you walk your paths.

Hi Jo Ann,
It's been a while. Nice slabbing out front!
You are very active for your age. I hope to do so well. I used to do it all myself, but now that DH is retired I'm more than happy to have help.

Caroline,
Jobs. They never end.

Vicki,
Pretty area to work in. Sorry about the tree tho.

Oh Pirl,
I can see why they had to go. How sad. How massive! They really had a trunk on them.
Last year my lovely ''Emarald'' Arborvitaes had to go too. It was a bear digging them out and I miss the privacy, but I gained 4' x 8' of garden. I only had four trees.

The only plans I have so far, is to have the DH build a small raised bed. I want to can carrots and our garden dirt is too rocky. If I like it, I will have him make a few more. The idea is also not to dig into the apple tree roots next to the garden.

Rose - I use photos to remind me of jobs I want to get done. I was sailing smoothly during December's first two warm weeks but checked the list as it snowed. I have over 100 jobs for both April and May!

You're right, Kabby. It was lovely spreading it with the scent, then my neighbor told me spruce deters insects - a double bonus.

Pirl,
I hope you can find someone to actually make you a nice bench. It would be a nice keepsake and a nice place to sit.

Jo Ann,
It might be nice to supervise for a change. At least planting new flowers gives you more time to stop and smell the roses. That's the problem we have. We're up and running and never stop to really sit for a while.

Wow, Arlene. That was definitely a huge loss of privacy and beauty. I can almost smell that wonderful spruce scent. So glad that you got to use some of it.

Sally - EJ, the tree guy, cut the "log" but it should have been cut in two. How fussy can I be when he didn't charge me for his attempt? We'll work it out, I'm sure.

Gardeners seldom sit unless we're having company. There's always some job we spot that just has to be done.

Vickie - it will take time to get used to their absence!

Pirl, That is quite a dramatic change. Hope it settles in over winter and you find a new idea while wintering.
