As of 7-9-2010 in the Phoenix, AZ area the Home Depot and Targets Garden Centers have purslane!

Feel free to post your nurseries that carry it too!

I checked HD...nothing! Only Moss Rose in this area there. Ah well! I'll check a REAL nursery next time. Something this area doesn't have a lot of...the real nurseries, that is. But I can think one nursery that MIGHT have some.

The purslane I bought from Dh is really different...the tag says Purslane Verdolaga, The laves are "wimpy" and the blooms are much smaller. Still pretty but not the umbraticola I like. (sp?)

I think Verdolaga is just another common term for purslane, so that probably doesn't tell you much then.
I'm most familiar with P. oleracea, which is supposed to be the best species for eating. P. umbraticola...have you ever seen 'Yubi'? I saw something about it...it is designated a Texas Superstar plant, so I might try that sometime if I can ever find it! Still edible, unlike the Moss Rose at HD.

Linda, do you sometimes feel this cubit is just for you and me? hahaha. Well, Janet loves it too!

I had a YUBI and the blossoms are HUGE!!!!! I believe Growers Exchange sold them but they are out. I did not order any this year from anywhere. The best one I have is the Hot Pink and Orange I potted together 2 years ago. All the new ones have small blossoms.

Next year maybe I can save up and order some different ones. But the ones I over winter do great so some of my plants become perennials.

I think the main problem is that for the most part purslanes just aren't available in local nurseries. So not too many people are so into them. Yes, blame it on the nursery industry!
The site with the Texas Superstar info:
http://texasasla.org/files/pur...
So it was the whole Yubi Summer Joy series of P. umbraticola. And on another site I'd come across the fact that P. oleracea 'Yubi Summer Joy Scarlet' is recommended as a good edible purslane which ALSO has pretty scarlet flowers, double duty plant, you might say.
Of course, if you wanted to broaden the scope of the site, you could always include something else.
Ornamentals with edible flowers or leaves comes to mind...but that's just because I like edible plants here and there in the garden. Ha! Little snacks in the garden! I'm organic, so there is no problems with the edibles. Right now, I am snacking on mostly Yellow Pear tomatos and figs (not ornamentals) and purslane...unless you count the herbs, mints and nettle mostly. Unfortunately, the nasturtium flowers give out once summer starts. My friend is trying to get me to grow squash just for the flowers, which are pretty darn good, according to her.

I think I will leave it just Purslane. I am so busy on some of my other sites and am the admin for our local Southwest Living....I'm okay it's slow here...but someone has to keep the love of purslane going, right?

The pear tomatoes sound yummy. I've been gobbling up melons this summer!

Ok, I had to join and let you know that thanks to YOU Becky, I LOVE purslane.

I bought two pots at our local Lowes and have them in baskets.

One is pink and the other yellow.

The one thing that encouraged me was that if you can get it to grow in your wicked heat, surely it would do well here Rolling on the floor laughing

Thank you for my new addiction Hilarious!

Happy to oblige I tip my hat to you. So happy you like it Vic. Even though they tell you it's an annual, in Phoenix and the hot regions it does come back.

I have been learning from my own garden and old plant stakes...I do have some YUBI~ The blooms are so big compared to all the smaller ones which are still lovely.

I would send you all a start of it but I have no clue if purslane travels well...haha

I'm betting it re-seeds here but I'm also going to take them in before first frost.

I have an "indoor" greenhouse Rolling on the floor laughing

Actually, it's a walk in crawl space but it's my area with lots of grow lights and garden tables, dirt floor, etc. I can go down there and make messes and be grubby and dirty and nobody knows. I LOVE it Thumbs up

oh, Vic, that sounds like heaven! I would love that. I took a purslane inside two winters ago...it sat in a sunny window and bloomed on and off all winter. Not consistently but it was fun! Sometime in February it stopped and the stems got yellow and it looked bad. I cut it back to the soil level and in late march took it outside. By summer it was blooming and beautiful!

I guess from the sound of it I'm lucky as purslane and portulaca are a great favorite here, the nurseries even supermarkets sell them at about a dollar a pot. Big Grin

I tired to go into the web site and create a user profile and couldn't. They make you copy these letters and words and I tried 5 times. It's broken. I sent them a note about it. Now I will trot over to ebay. Hurray!
