I'm such a procrastinator. I still haven't gotten potting mix. I don't plan to wintersow much, but I'm sure I'll want to start a few things.

I now have 4 x 2.8cf bags of Metro Mix just waiting to be planted Whistling

I spent a little time on Sunday getting my indoor area in order, trying to get ready to bring some plants inside soon.

I'm in for WSing this year, too! I'll be doing this mainly for color bedding transplants for my edible landscaping, and for my niece with the totally bare, 1 acre back yard...

Of course, she doesn't know it yet, but the milk jugs are going in her own bare back yard....I won't have room at my place!

L-I-N-D-A. For K-A-R-E-N, who's having a bad day and can't spell names...tee hee hee!

^ Smiling ^^ Smiling ^ (Linda, and Karen, who should consider shipping her entire front yard to Linda, so Karen can have more space for her WSed plants!) Hurray! Hurray!

I won't be WSing very much this year, Linda. No place to put more plants after 6 years of this.

Karen,
I was going through an old file looking for a pic, and I came across this. It was my early attempt with coleus.

The pics are before and after collages, side x side.....

Sure.

But why would you ruin a beer with salt? Yuk.

I am not a milk drinker so I use soda bottles for wintersowing. I like being able to see the plants inside without lifting the top. I have some of the plastic trays that fit 8 bottles per tray so they are easy to move around.

Are there any types of seeds that can be fall sown? I store my potting mix in lined garbage cans outside. Last year I had to bring them in to defrost! I may fill my containers in advance once the black walnut trees are done messing up my patio with leaves, branches and nuts. It hurts when those darn nuts hit you in the head. Poor Winston the pug is sleeping under the desk at my feet. He doesn't mind thunderstorms, but he is concerned when walnuts hit the roof. He wakes up and checks to be sure the sky isn't falling.

I sometimes use 2 liter pop bottles too. Only problem is they blow over, blow away pretty easily. I usually keep them in plastic bins weighed down with bricks to prevent blowing.

Lots of seeds can be direct sown in fall. Also recommended for a very few seeds for wintersowing which need warm-cold-warm periods. Don't know what seeds, though I think it's mostly some shrubs and trees that are tough to germinate. I've never done it. I don't usually start WSing until January.

Linda, if you want to come and dig up my plants, today might be your last chance. Our low tonight is supposed to be in the 30s.

Sure, Karen.....I'm all caught up in my garden Rolling my eyes.

Besides trying to make sure I've got all of my stuff in, I've got to try to get up to the fairgrounds to pull anything from our herb beds there that need overwintering. My schedule is so busy today, I may end up covering my plants, and keeping my fingers crossed for the fairgrounds (we're pretty well protected between 2 buildings up there). Winter is coming WAY too quickly.

I was excited yesterday, though. I was potting up my lemongrass, and opened a new bag of Metro-Mix that I bought from a greenhouse locally. It said Metro-Mix professional, and was marked "custom blend". It is a fabulous, loose mixture with lots of perlite. I've used the Metro Mix 300 before, but I think I'm going to like this better. Glad I stocked up on it!! Should be great for Wintersowing.

Oops, sorry mom2goldens, I meant the other Linda- Gymgirl. See her posts above where she keeps harrassing me to dig up my entire coleus bed and mail it to her in Tx. That's not happening!

I'm feeling pressure, too. I have a few busy days ahead. Besides working, I'm in the process of doing stuff for my Mom (financial stuff that she just can't do herself). Then carpal tunnel surgery on my right hand on Oct 11. I'm not allowed to use my right hand for 10 days post op. I am severely right handed- I can't do anything with my left hand. So that will mean no gardening the entire time. Also going to the Smoky Mountains for a few days for falll foliage after that, so I'm really feeling pressured.

And my ever-so-helpful husband wants me to go to Pittsburgh for his great nephew's christening the weekend before surgery (next weekend). And it'll be Mom's 87th birthday that weekend, too. Trust me, that trip to Pittsburgh is not on my agenda.

Karen
