Probably won't be me, I don't plant-shop often with no stores nearby... Hoping folks will post as they see stuff in stores, maybe those who read and and want to attempt to find more can make the most well timed efforts/visits to stores.

Are you looking for something in particular when you shop? I'm just looking for MORE. :+)

We don't get purslane early enough which makes no sense because we are in hot Phoenix. Portulaca shoes up in late April.

I should check the nursery I usually buy them at...they get them early! One of mine from last year is definitely alive...the other two pots were also until that 26° sneaked up one night. Definitely spring is starting here, in spite of occasional cold nights.

Maybe I was late checking in at my city nursery where I get purslane! ONE single plant of purslane sitting there, beside literally tons of moss rose! Well, I got that one plant. I'm going to try to get to the Herb Farm out in the boonies soon, where they have the "special" two-toned purslane that I'm really been yearning after. Should be able to get to get my fennel there also, since I couldn't find any at the other nursery. People are out buying plants like flocks of vultures picking over roadkill in that darn city! Hilarious!

I went to the herb farm place today. Probably should have called first, because I was told they didn't have any of the "Duet" purslane available yet. But then again, since I was there I had a nice time, looking at everything (literally tons of plants!), and talking to the employees. And I took advantage of the chance to buy some small plants. As I was checking out, the lady in charge asked if I'd found everything I wanted, and I mentioned the purslane I still wanted. So, she excused herself and then came back with a plant, a small "Duet" plant left over from last year...it seems to be barely starting to come back and grow, but I'll repot it and see how it does. They mostly do wholesale, but will sell retail to anyone who comes out there, plus certain big events in the city.

I was at L's Sunday getting some patio bricks and didn't see any. Hoping for some sprouts from seeds dropped by last years' plants... and got a few packs of seeds for moss roses.

The plant is actually a Portulaca, but really looks like purslane, so I still think of it as purslane.,

Yes, they're all Portulacas. (Moss roses = P. grandiflora. Ornamental purslane = P. umbraticola. Regular purslane = P. oleracea.) Sorry if I was confusing. I meant I didn't see any plants of any Portulaca species.

I'm sorry, Tiffany, I was talking about the plant I had bought at the herb farm...it's really in the Portulaca genus despite having leaves that look more like it's in the Purslane genus to me. The P. like above can stand for Purslane or Portulaca. Sometimes people call them all purslane, but there's two botanical genuses. And then, just to confuse us, there is other botanical genuses that people call purslane.

The preface to the info I offered, that "they're all Portulacas" was intended to make the use of the abbreviated P. obvious that I was referring to Portulaca each time. That is what I meant because purslane isn't a genus.

And yes, common names can connect to a genus, specific species, or not. Overlap is very common with common names, and confusion can arise when a specific ID has not yet been established in the discussion by use of a botanical epithet.

purslane = Portulaca oleracea
ornamental purslane = Portulaca umbraticola
moss roses = Portulaca grandiflora

These are the ones I've seen in stores over the yrs as bedding plants. There are also many other species of Portulaca, some of which have more of a house plant reputation vs. a landscape decoration.
