I just bought a purslane for a dollar at Walmart in the dying section . Never had one before, but I got it back on its feet! I think I could easily be addicted.

I was at Lowes this morning and they have portulaca and purslane but I didn't get any. I have purslane blooming and portulaca coming up from seed.

I need to go to my lowes!!!

mom got one or two at lowes but I do some what doubt their I.D. , as mine is no where even close to looking the rest of that kind in the database.

Just so people know in the future, you can now buy ornamental purslane seeds from various places online and then start them early and have them growing long before they appear in stores. Just google for "purslane hot toucan mix" and you'll find a number of different places to buy them.

Unfortunately, I bought the seeds months ago, and just recently got around to planting them. Fortunately, from what I know about the non-ornamental salad greens version of purslane, they sprout quickly, and grow rapidly, so I should still get months of flowers out of them. I'm even going to try eating them to see what they taste like.

Hot toucan mix are nice. Come in bright colors.
Starting from seed are cheap and will provide abundance seedling. But for who want instant plants and impatience to wait that tiny seed to grow, buying flowering plants is an option.

Nursery sometimes also sell novelty or special variety from cuttings which not available in seed form.

By the way how about your experiment eating them ? Is the taste just the same to vegetable purslane or worse ?

I've not tried any but so many confuse P. umbraticola with P. oleracea (both ornamentally and culinarily) that there must not be much difference in taste. You can find TONS of blog/forum posts with pics of people's "yummy" P. umbraticola plants. They are *still* reports this growing season of these plants being sold with labels that say P. oleracea.

I will sow golden variety of vegetable purslane today. Wish they grow fast so I can compare the taste

I've found many nurseries mislabel the varieties . . . and I have eaten them all with little difference in taste, mostly just eat the fresh new leaves though.
