As far as rooting substrate goes, I know they are a bit expensive, but nothing beats Grodan cubes for me. So easy to move around under lights, superb moisture retention and they can be planted outside once ready. They also have a good deal of structure/stability, so you could take a cutting and direct it down into the medium without damaging the severed stalk and the plant stays upright until it starts rooting.
