'upstate NY' refers to the main part of the state north of NY city. local type term. We hare 5 miles or so from the ocean & 10 miles by winding road. There is a 299 ft or so hill (or small mountain' between us & the ocean. it gets colder just to the west of us.

Sort of a cold ocean. south near Cape Cod the Gulf Stream turns towards Europe & less 'warm' oceanic. going to the beach is like wading in ice water. Cape Cod is the arm which stretches East into the ocean.

That water at the beach in Cape Cod is not that warm either!!!!

My parents used to leave in Orleans MA and we went to Nauset beach every day. Damn cold if you ask me, even in August! Blinking

ha ha! Knowing both Mediterranean sea and Atlantic Ocean I know what you mean!I remember Brittany too. You feel like walking in the sea but not swimming much as it is too cold there!
