What To Do with All Those Herbs

By SongofJoy
September 9, 2011

Growing herbs can be addictive. You begin with one or two small plants in a window and end up with an entire herb garden. It's fun and relatively easy to grow them, and you just might reap a bountiful harvest. Here are some ideas for what to do with all those wonderful herbs.

Hurray! Lovey dubby When planting herbs and other garden plants, plant extra for the butterfly caterpillars if it is a host plant. Also don't use insecticides if possible.

Very informative article Tee!

Even though I'm not successful with herbs, I certainly enjoyed your informative article. I think I "over love" them with water. You've made it very interesting to me, and nudged me to try them again.

I tip my hat to you. Can you grow herbs very easily in AZ, Susie? They are a tough bunch of plants in general, but ... ?

I have great luck with several types of lavender plants. Have to be careful not to over water and to prune properly. I've had great luck with reseeding too. I think I've mentioned at least once that when the flowers wane I cut them off the plant and drag them in the dirt where I want new plants. This year I have about 50 new 2-3 inch plants in a 5x10 foot space. I'll have to dig and pot some of the up to thin out.

I planted French tarragon in the ground (shade) and it did well until we got the consistent heat. Maybe it's still alive at the root Smiling The basic "Italian/French kitchen" herbs do pretty well in filtered light.

Thanks, Anna. You can purchase orris root powder from Amazon and eBay. Larger craft stores sometimes carry it. Orris root products are made from the dried roots of these three Iris: Iris germanica, Iris florentina and Iris pallida. Smiling
