Had to add a space after the colon to get the tag to work properly.

Well, it's no trouble at all. Fact is, I really wanted that tag to work, as I'm hoping friend might be able to shed some light on this one. I'm completely fascinated by this thing. Darn thing looks like something you would see stuck to someone's face in a an old Sigourney Weaver movie.

Yes, I'm voting for the first ID: space alien.

But maybe if you could tell us more about the tree this came off of. Size and shape of leaves, size and shape of tree...

It may not be a mangosteen but the outer shell still looks like one and I do believe it is related. Other fruits in the clusiaceae family , that the mangostenn is in ,do split open.
If you google "clusiaceae fruits" you will see several in this family of plants that split open like this one.

closest info I can find is it's cousin clusia major's fruit is poisonous and seems to be cultivated as a mostly ornamental plant.

This is interesting bcos I found another plant which closely resembles the clusia mangle, but with many remedial properties including cures for bladder, haemorrhage and fever. The rhizophora mangle.
