It looks like our didn't make it through the winter over but I'm still holding out hope for some sign of a sprout. It was very nice while we had it. I'll have to try some other patens. I love the large colorful flowers.

Beautiful color!! I have been considering trying one or two of the Salvia Patens types but I think I better wait because all my seedlings are doing good so far and I already have a salvia order placed at FBTS and an order at Gardens in the Wood of Grassy Creek!

Incredible color, I wonder how it would do as an annual.

Salvia patens are one of the most used garden plants in the UK. They grow and bloom so fast that many in the US treat them like annuals. One can also lift them after the first frost and treat the tubers just like Dahlias.

Key to success with this species is partial shade (in most places) and rich soil with adequate moisture. They do less well in the SouthEast, with warm and humid nights.

The color is lovely! Lovey dubby

Many years ago, when I was still newer to growing Salvias, I found a Salvia patens at a local nursery with a variegated-leaf sport on one stem. Unfortunately, the tag that came with that Salvia patens recommended full sun and drier soil. Needless to say, that really didn't work in Georgia and the plant didn't survive long at all. Stupid tag! Angry

Rest in peace, little guy...

P.S. Obviously, my plant was NOT 'Patio Sky Blue' but a darker blue cultivar.

Too bad you didn't try to propagate that variegated stem. Drooling

That was the goal, Duane, but I was planning to grow it out a bit so that I could cut some and also leave some on the mother plant in case the cutting failed. Sadly, I gave it the conditions that the tag recommended so it never grew and then gave up completely in the heat of summer. It was at least 15 years ago.

After reading Kermit's comments it sure is tempting to put in a new order for a couple of Patens. I think 2 more would still be able to fit with my other order in 1 box. I may have to just do that! After all I can't have too many Salvias!😊

@Marilyn
Thank you for adding about the Agastaches!! I should have said "can't have too many Agastaches and Salvias"! I am planning on adding to my Agastaches too- just waiting to see which ones survived and where I can fit more in! I think I could be happy with only Agastaches and Salvias but am grateful for the other plants we have too! Smiling

We grew this variety for 2 years, and subsequently dropped it. It is a bit smaller than the old standby varieties (Oxford Blue, Cambridge Blue, Blue Angel) but that is really the only distinguishing factor. It was not a popular choice. I haven't seen it much in the trade. It is not unusual to see a variety introduced and promoted for a year or two and then more or less disappear.

I had been debating putting in a second order @FBTS and it was this post that settled my debate- I put in my second order today and it was hard to narrow down but I included one Salvia Patens Blue Angel!' I would have loved to have several more (the Cambridge Blue, Chilcombe, and Elk Baby Blue, and the Large Form all look beautiful). Danita's photo and some photos in the database for Blue Angel helped. @Marilyn your pics were great! Oh if I only had an unlimited budget for plants..... Sighing!
