Hello!

I was out in my backyard looking for a spot to plant some grapes when I found a tree growing by our fence I never noticed before. We never planted anything there and I don't know how it got there. Can anyone help Identify it?

Can you take more photos when the sun is at a different angle? And closer images would probably be helpful.

Jared,

How long have you lived there? It looks like a tree coming up from an old cut down stem. Its really big at the bottom to be a brand new, just grew tree (does look like a tree though).

Yes, closer photos are needed.

Hello!

I lived here in this house for 15 years. I was four when we moved here and when we moved here, my dad said we tried to plant some trees in that general area years ago, but none ever germinated and we cant remember what we tried to plant.

Here is a close up of the tree, the top 2 1/2 feet broke off in a wind storm:

And the leaves:

I think that one snuck up on you (to get that big). You may have wait for it to do something more dramatic, like bloom. Smiling

Hello!

You are probably right. I need to wait for it to bloom, but while I was waiting for a response, I figured out how it got there. VERY close to that tree is another tree in my neighbors yard. I just figured out it has the EXACT same type of leaves and branch colors. I think it dropped a seed in my backyard and it was lucky enough to germinate. This is only a theory.

Okay, here's another theory for you. That is a sucker off your neighbor's tree. Go knock on the door and ask them what it is.

Also, Jared if that little tree is close to a big tree in your neighbor's yard, then you really DON'T want to plant your grapes there. Remember a tree will have roots 'way out beyond where the branches reach. Your neighbor's tree will steal all the water and fertilizer you give your grape plants.

The photos are not clear enough and don't show enough detail so I can't even guess. Sorry.

While you wait to idenitify your tree check out the free tree giveaway near you. http://www.postfallsidaho.org/...

No matter what type of tree it is, the location by the fence isn't good. It's way too close, and sounds like it's too close to the neighbor tree too. I would remove it right away before it gets any larger. It can be dug out, or you could use Round Up on it if you don't mind using that.

We have a tree next to a block wall, and it's heaving up the block wall and splitting it. We love the tree, so now we end up having to dig out all the roots that go under the wall.

If its suckering off the neighbor's tree, round-up may not be the best choice.
