Sherry. I have two also doing the same thing! I just keep hoping there going to take off any day it's just got a slow start compared to the rest of the plant.

Wind can snap stalks. I had a stalk of American Maid which 'froze in an upright position (like an iron bar)' one year. the plant was fine the following year.

The signaling to grow may include the amount of moisture from rain. Plant takes up the fresh moisture and then a freeze and sometimes wind occurs breaking or weakening some stalks. Possibility?

Great. Another freeze warning for tonight. Something else I have been seeing on some of my fans is what looks like a dark green smear of something. It's not wet to the touch but much darker green than the nice green that fans should be. I'll try to get a photo tomorrow and post it. Any ideas?

Blessings

That happened to a few of mine after the freezing we had here last week then those leaves just went limp. It's weird because not all of the leaves are effected on the plant, just one each time. Usually it is one of the leaves that is overlapped by another. I can't believe my first iris experience is coming during a year with strange winter and spring weather Thumbs down I feel like I'm going to be really disappointed once bloom time comes Crying

Sherry, I have 4 clumps that got stunted like that. They are in different beds with healthy clumps right next to them. Like you mentioned, the rhizomes are all hard and healthy.

I've got a couple that just look like the stunted part. Glare

Here is the dark green I am seeing on some of the fans. This morning was our 4th freeze in about 9 days;

I have seen the same thing on a few irises. Nothing else seems to be amiss. I feel of all of the fans and nothing is in the leaves and nothing is wrong with the rhizomes so I note it and cease to fret about it. I have seen it in other years also. As you say it is not wet or sticky..... just a wet looking spot. I should try to wash it gently and see if it comes off. hmmm......

I don't think it's anything to concern yourself about....I *think* it's just an area that doesn't have the 'glaucus' (or however you spell it ! *Blush* ) coating.....that "waxy" surface. if you 'wet' the leaves, I don't think you will see the water 'run off " that area...in other words, that part of the leaf WILL get wet, instead of shedding the water. I see it , sometimes, and I *think* it's caused by the same factors that cause 'pineappling".....cold snaps, or "physical restraint" keeping the new leaves from emerging from the fans easily.

Thank you, Arlyn. It does not seem to hurt them so no worries. Smiling

Thanks guys. As you say, nothing else seems to be amiss. Other than the weather. I think I've had enough of these freeze warnings. The good thing is they have been very dry, so no frost.

Thanks again for the answers.

Blessings

I have the same problem, i feel relief that i'm not the only one, and to confirm it could be a weather problem. In a group of facebook they told me that this can happen due to drastic temperature change during the day. In where i live we are at the ending of winter. Although i feel very sad cause it was the first bloom of 'snapshot' Sad

Welcome to the site, by the way, Daniel! Welcome!

That looks particularly bad there, Daniel. That is really unfortunate. I hope you can find some luck next spring! Sad

Welcome! daniel to the iris forum

i believe it's what people on this forum call "pineappling"? at least, i think that's what they call it.

Oh, that's what happened to some of my irises last year. Here we had a mild winter, then snow in spring followed by a hard frost. The irises were not prepared for that!
