It looks like purslane, Portulaca oleracea.

Cross posted, at least we agreed!

If you have any elderly Mexican Indian friends, they will think it's edible. The rest of us just think it's a weed. Smiling

Every little piece you leave in the garden will turn into a brand new plant. You can actually buy seed for this stuff!

An excellent ground cover for taller entities that shades the ground.
"Purslane's mat-like growing habit makes it a good alternative to lawns or other ground covers, particularly for the homeowner focused on edible landscaping. A study conducted by the University of Connecticut concluded that the plant also worked effectively at organically controlling weeds in broccoli patches. By broadcasting purslane seeds before transplanting broccoli seedlings, researchers determined that purslane acted as a "living mulch," comparable to chemical weed control and more expensive mulches, such as black plastic." - Garden Guides

"As a companion plant, purslane provides ground cover to create a humid microclimate for nearby plants, stabilising ground moisture. Its deep roots bring up moisture and nutrients that those plants can use, and some, including corn, will follow purslane roots down through harder soil that they cannot penetrate on their own (ecological facilitation). It is known as a beneficial weed in places that do not already grow it as a crop in its own right." - Wiki

Purslane will not propagate from leaf cuttings!

I was referring to those little fat, triangular things on the ends of the stems. But they don't break open and spill seeds; just form a new plant. It doesn't take much stem, just one with a node.

I can't find a photo and probably not going to drive to California and find one. Smiling

Shrug! Perhaps this has been "dummied down" too much? Can you supply the botanical term for the plant part in question? Thank You!

I can't tell you what it is, just what it looks like: a different type of leaf that is small and fat. Its not a seed capsule as it never breaks open, just sprouts new plants. Maybe I am not looking close enough and they really are seed pods.

Next time I find one, I will take a photo and examine closely. There aren't any in Reno so it will have to be a California trip.

Sorry I have, once again, said something that causes you issues. I will change my previous post to not include leaves.

Is there a confusion between some kind of "mother of millions" Kalanchoe and Portulaca oleracea?

Daisy, I think what you describe might be seed pods. Look at some of the photos on google, they have a cup shaped bottom which holds seeds with a flattish pointed cap.

https://www.google.co.uk/searc...

On the other hand, some plants do appear to make clusters of small leaves at the end of a stem which would root when laid on the ground, look at the photos posted by jojoe on this old thread ..

The thread "rooting portulaca???" in Purslane and Portulaca forum

This photo shows seed pods alongside the clustered leaves on the end of a stem. Could this be the leaves you were thinking of, which would perhaps become detached from the main plant with a small amount of stem attached and that is what would take root?

Could be. My problem is that I haven't lived there for 3 years but I remember the "seed pods," or whatever they might be, being very angular. Never saw them bloom but when I pulled one up, if I shook the plant even a little, these things fell off. I am going for a visit in a couple weeks and I am going to go find one and examine it carefully. I'll get back to you. Smiling

Purslane is very edible and has a super high omega3 profile...check the nutrition data base...try it. How can you ignore fresh greens delivered to your door.
