Can you grown them in containers or do they need lots of room to spread.

Welcome to NGA! Welcome!

I have grown them in pots. They don't seem to notice. Just make sure the pot is a good size - at least 5 gallons, 10 would be better. If you live in a warm climate (please update your info to include where you are - we will have better answers that way), the pot will have to be insulated. Heavy terra cotta or one of those double walled foam pots.

I agree a large pot is required while they do not spread much they have a fairly large root system and do not like them disturbed.

@vma4922 There was an article about it last month; here's the link in case you missed it: http://garden.org/ideas/view/dave/2591/The-National-Gardenin...
And there's also a discussion thread over in the Site Talk Forum:
The thread "ATP will soon be the NGA" in Site Talk forum

The Site Talk forum is a good one to keep an eye on.
