How close to put a trellis for clematis support?

O.k. I may be overthinking this....
I have free standing trellises that I want my clematis to grow up. What is the ideal amount of space needed between my trellis and the clematis?

I'm sure everyone has a method that works but I'd say 6" to 12" would be ideal so the clematis can spread and grow. Have fun!
